Finally, the picks of the week. Alex says, “I’m going with the re-release of Nadia – I’ve been very impressed with the quality of GKids anime releases, and I’m really looking forward to seeing this show in a remastered form.” Blaine says, “nothing on this week’s list jumps out at me, but the inclusion of American Gothic (2016) reminded me of how excellent American Gothic (1995) was, and I can wholeheartedly recommend that.”
We have a couple of films listed that pretty much define, “Not for all tastes.” I rather liked The Witch for its willingness to take Puritan folklore and beliefs literally, but the film made for the Venn diagram overlap of history buffs, horror fans, and film hipsters will disappoint, bore, and offend a number of people.
Shortbus— it’s certainly original but, like The Witch, watch at your own risk.
Yeah, I hated the VVitch. Spoilers: It was a story of a poor girl who is enslaved in a cult by her parents, and just when she finds real power and starts getting super-powers and joins a new group of empowered women, the movie ends.
The movie struck me as being aimed at the people who find it horrific that there might actually be non-Christians. As the guy who met his wife at Pagan Camp, I was mad at my eldest daughter for telling us it was good and that we should go see it.
Interesting take. I prefer to see it as thoughtfully taking what (some) people literally believed happened with witches a few centuries back and exploring the implications, sort of like those Ted Chiang stories where he extrapolates the implications of older views of the world (ancient Babylonian cosmology, early nineteenth-century science), if those views represented how reality actual works. But again, the movie pretty much defines “YMMV.”
I’m glad I saw Shortbus as well, though it arguably makes The Boys seem family-friendly. It is more optimistic, however.
