Bureau’s Breakroom’s Television Table – Week beginning 2022 September 4

We are in a golden age of fantastic prequels, at least I hope so.  I haven’t caught up with the House Lord of the Ringing Dragon Power prequels yet, but we know that classic series never get disappointing prequels.  The House of the Dragon’s third episode gives us the Second of His Name, and the Rings of Power doesn’t give us any clues.  Stargirl begins suspecting their small town neighbors.  She-Hulk and Lower Decks both leave us guessing, but See tells us we see Wren warn of war as the Witchfinder’s revolt.  If you’re butt wasn’t kicked sufficiently, take a visit to Cobra Kai for their fifth season to see if a sequel is more your thing.

[All synopses (and titles) from Trakt.tv below the cut, except when there really aren’t any. (If a show’s synopsis is a spoiler to you, do not click Continue reading →)]

  1. Once you get through the protracted infodump opening (Why? Why?), Rings of Power gets…. okay. Great visuals, some solid performances, and it maintains at least the mythic tone of Tolkien. It is not Lord of the Rings, so don’t expect that. Although it cannot claim to be a prequel to the movie series, due to rights reasons, the look is similar and they filmed in New Zealand.

Ultimately, the fame of LoTR rests with its source. That won’t change. Thus far, RoP is better by far than certain other prequels to which you allude.

I don’t know about the Dragons one. I’ll be seeing that in a few months, I expect.

    • Rings of Power feels like a different world. It should for the time difference, but I haven’t read the source material in decades and didn’t read the Silmarillion. (I tried, but fell asleep. At work. Never went back to it.) I might just have been playing too much D&D lately, but it feels like we are gathering the party for a new campaign.

      • “Gathering the party” happens in a lot of TV series, but I guess it’s a little more on the nose when you quite literally tick the boxes for dwarf, elf (2 off), halfling (and spare?), human (rogue/warrior/thief?), human (outcast?), human (possessed?), and – potentially – a wizard (I’m guessing the halfling’s giant is Gandalf, despite his canon arrival in Middle Earth being during the Third Age).

Visually though, it’s clear where a lot that vast budget went and I’m really enjoying seeing what they’ve done with some of the locations I’ve only seen in my minds eye or various bits of art done by fans or for calendars, etc. Sure, the pace so far is slow (and yeah, that massive info dump), but Tolkein didn’t exactly rush things either, so I’m going to enjoy the ride I think. Also, since I got kind of bored with comic book superheroes and checked out of the Marvel-verse after Infinity War (DC before that), it’s good to have another genre getting a bit more air time to provide somethings different than all the many, many, Star Trek and Star Wars series being aired at the moment.
