That’s the best news of the day! I’ve been hoping for this series since I caught up with Crusade on DVD. Hopefully now, without the Trek franchise taking up the mainstream attention for Sci-fi, we can see another Babylon 5 or Farscape come down the pike.

I know this got beat up a bit here on this site when it came out several years ago but it is nice to see it out on DVD. It was nice to see another area of the universe that we’d not gotten a close look at before.

I think the major problem with this, and Crusade, was that in following Babylon 5, they seemed like pale imitations. B5 had such epic scope, and fans had so much invested in it by the end, that the bar was set terribly high. Then, when the first season is a little rough, and let’s face it, what first season isn’t it’s hard for a network to invest in a second. Look at the first season of Next Generation-it got a LOT better. and I remember a lot of carping about how it didn’t stack up to the heights set by Wrath of Khan. And that’s true. The first season of DS9? Please. Week upon week of Sisko has to make nice with a visiting religious leader while Kira is in near mutiny because there’s a Cardassian war criminal on the Station and nobody is shooting him, and in the meantime O’Brien has to dope witht he fact that all the chicken soup nozzles in the food replicators are clogged. That got lots better. Even Voyager got better, from a letdown in the first season (but not a lot better) In non-trek tv, even the first season of B5 is pedestrian compared to seasons three and four, and Farscape floundered a little before the series found its voice. It’s too bad that there doesn’t seem to be the will to keep something on the air until its potential is truly seen, unless it’s a runaway hit. Imagine a second season of Firefly, or a night stalker really hitting its stride.
I wonder where Crusade or Rangers could have gone.
I guess the market is such that no one can afford to stick these things out.

Actually, the problem with Crusade was that JMS wanted “too much” creative control over the series. It was very cerebral, and the producers wanted more fistfights and sex. JMS said no. Producers are not used to hearing the word “no”. End Crusade.
I wonder how common that is. Maybe the reason a lot of the good shows get cancelled is because the creative team won’t let the execs have their way when they don’t understand what it is that they’re meddling with…
