Because they want to mess with DVRs?

        McBingo.

Except that my DVR automatically determines start and stop times on all shows. It had no problems identifying the extra couple of minutes (in fact, that’s how I knew it was long). My wife watches Nip/Tuck and last week’s eppisode was 1 hr 21 min and it caught that.

Now archaic VCR users on the other hand….. I pity you. :)

Because we can record whatever we want, keep it as long as we like and not have to pay every month to use it? Yeah, we’re a sad crew.

Canada doesn’t have the DMCA. I’ve got a DVR that lets me record whatever I want, keep it as long as I want, and without service charges. I have to pay extra for the HDTV channels, but not for the actual terminal services. The only advantage my old VCR had over the DVR was the ability to watch it on another machine.

Some DVRs don’t have monthly fees see: MythTV

I think it’s more to frustrate DVR users because it’ll cause people to lose other shows… “Oooo can’t miss this show, Doh! The DVR won’t pick it up because this other show is running 4 minutes longer than normal!”

That’s how I see it at least, the people with dual tuners at least have a fighting chance but even with that I have “issues” at times.

  1. The Others
What I found really weird about the episode is that they were only attacked by the others twice, yet they were utterly freaked out by it.

Yes, they were infiltrated, but so was the other group. It really seams that they were way edgier than they perhaps should have been.

Another nitpick. Wasn’t Bernard in the lavatory at the back of the plane when they crashed? If he was in his seat, wouldn’t he have been back by his wife? The only explaination is that he could have gotten in any seat available when the heavy turbulence hit, but I don’t think thats strong enough, it felt like a continuity error to me.

Anyway, I loved the pacing of the show, espically the last few days of the recap. I also like how after the crash they kept asking everyone if they were a doctor. Well now they get to meet the doctor. Next weeks episode should be really good.

Yeah, this was one of the things that made this episode very unsatisfactory for me. Sure, they had been attacked and twelve of their number abducted, but they hadn’t had any contact with the Others (apart from Goodwin) for weeks by the time Our Heroes washed ashore.

And speaking of numbers… Libby said in a previous episode that there had been 23 survivors from the tail section. Three were taken the first night, nine in the second attack. Guy with broken leg died. I’m assuming Libby didn’t count Goodwin among the survivors. We know of Ana Lucia, Eko, Libby, Cindy and Bernard. 3 + 9 + 1 + 5 = 18. Was I just not paying attention, or shouldn’t there have been more tailfolk when we first saw them?

I didn’t really have an issue with that part. I figured he was in the lavatory when the turbulence hit, came out and took the first seat he could find. I don’t see that as weak.

What I did see as weak was Ana Lucia thinking something was off with Goodwin because he came out of the jungle and wasn’t wet. She seemed convinced that this was damning evidence. But, hey, Bernard also came out of the jungle (albeit he was stuck in a tree) and wasn’t wet. Is it so hard to believe someone else might have been deposited in the jungle as well? Ana Lucia wouldn’t know this, of course, but we know of at least one example from the other group where this exact thing happened. Her logic didn’t make much sense to me.

I’d guess that she first assumed exactly that: Goodwin had landed in the jungle. She obviously noted that he was dry right from the start. Otherwise, she would have thought him the first potential spy. I think what happened is that over time, her paranoia began to get the best of her, and she started seeing enemies everywhere (thus scaring her crew as well) until finally she was vindicated by actually finding one.

With the knowledge that they really WERE being hunted, her madness starts to seem rational to the others, who more or less accept her as leader.

Maybe because Goodwin said he heard Bernard shouting, from the beach?

No, that’s fine. Remember that Charlie was repeatedly told that he had to return to his seat once turbulence hit, so it’s likely another member of the cabin crew had already gotten Bernard out of the rear toilet and into the first available seat before the plane broke up.

  2. hmm
Something I kept finding myself thinking about during the episode is just how bitterly angry the tail section guys are gonna be when they meet up with the front-half survivors. Think about it: comparatively speaking, our heroes have been living a life of luxury. They had all that nice scavenge from the plane to use, water bottles, blankets, chairs, tarps, etc etc etc, whereas the tail sectioners were scrabbling for everything except the clothes on their backs.

Bound to be some animosity over that (if nothing else, of course).

      You had water bottles!
      You shot my girlfriend!
      Ok, we’re even.

Alright, I downloaded this episode from bitTorrent. The episode length is 45:24. I thought I had the whole episode, but a friend of mine said that there are flashbacks of Ana Lucia’s life before the island. Is this true? Can anyone clear this up?

Anyway, if I was in Sayid’s position I would be pissed off and probably want to kill Ana RIGHT NOW. Obviously he’s more civilized than that, but I’m really really curious as to how he’s going to handle it.
Also, I can’t wait to see the struggle between Ana & Jack for control of "the tribe" and people start picking sides. Ooooh man. Such a good show.
