Though everyone seems to hate it…
and even though it’s a Braga show, I’ve enjoyed it when I’ve watched it. It’s not great, but it’s better than Surface. I’m not into crime dramas. basically the only shows that I have access to that I can watch that I would watch are:
Alias Surface Threshold Lost
Threshold is in the bottom 2 but still worth the time if I can catch it.
What I really need is the sci-fi channel, but i’m not paying the next tier in cable just for that one channel.

Exact opposite here – I gave up on this after four episodes, and the only reason I watched the fourth was because of Spiner and Dinklage. Surface isn’t great, but it’s far, far better than Threshold, mostly due to the fact that it’s internally consistent. Threshold‘s greatest problem is that it changes the signal’s method of attack every week, and if it were as invasive/infective as it seems they would have lost after the first week.

The signal is inconsistant, OR it’s simply smarter than the people know. The fact that Braga and the writers are just flailing in the dark and don’t have a solid plan for what the signal does and why is bad and points toward simple inconsistency instead of alien smarts.
Surface (IMO) is simply bad. the acting sucks, the situations are improbable at best and i’ve not been able to watch it without getting disgusted at the idiot characters. I know we’re all different, and I can’t stand Surface. I think the problem lies in that it’s really not a sci-fi show. I think of it as another animal that is threatening the people. I can’t suspend my disblief for the way the people act and the things they do. Like the last episode (my wife watched it) where they somehow built a homemade sub that plummetted into the ocean and they ended up not dying. completely ridiculous.
With Threshold, I can subconsiously give it more leeway because the subject matter is sci-fi and already out of the realm of believability. I’ve noticed this pattern with myself in movies and tv for years. Right or wrong, I can handle unbelievable stuff a lot better if the whole premise is already unrealistic.

I think that’s why I can’t stand it, the sense that Braga and the writers have no idea where they’re going, and they’re just making it up as they go along. They’ve gone and created a very nice maguffin in the signal, but then they ruined it by trying to explain it while reinventing it every week – maybe they shouldn’t have discovered the signal in the first episode, and simply hinted at it all along. My other big grip with the show was the completely unfeasible conspiracy, and the fact that the North Koreans were the foreign power they were worried about (was China busy?)

I will completely agree with you on the acting, but the people are ‘real’ if that makes any sense – hair gets messed up, people get cut, and stuff breaks (except for the sub, which should have imploded like this soda can). I’ve said it before, but Surface is my new Enterprise – not good enough to be ecstatic about, but not bad enough to give up on.
Besides, I like sea monsters.

Yeah, same here. I’m enjoying it, but I’m really starting to get tired of the
formula. They’re going to have to make bigger things start to actually
happen (instead of merely foreshadowing it) to hold my interest.
I have no interest in another show that strings me along, like Lost or Alias.
Both of which I stopped watching because of their refusal to feed enough
consistent information about the world at a reasonable pace.

And yes I do watch Battlestar Galactica, but its only the second best show on TV. Of all the new sci-fi on TV this year, I think Invasion might be the only lasting entry.

Sorry, but when they revealed nothing about what was behind the hatch in
the last episode of the first season, after building up the mystery so much, I
was outta there. Considering that it’s the same producer as Alias, I concluded that they’re making this up as they go along and I’ve
simply
stopped caring about what they’ll make up next.
There’s just no there there.

I never expected them to tell me what’s in the box, I mean… hatch, in the first season. Not for a second. To me, it was blindingly obvious that we’d only know that at the beginning of the next season.
See, “what’s in the box?” is one of the best weapons of the storytelling arsenal. Smallville used it (who’s in the spaceship = What’s In The Box), Lost used it, I’m sure others did while I wasn’t watching. And ending a season on a cliffhanger is a rating’s trick to get big numbers on the series premiere.
The point of Lost, you see, is that the VIEWERS are lost.
They keep confusing things happening, hinting at stuff, because half the fun is wondering “what’s that in the forest that’s bringing down trees?”, “what’s in the hatch?”, etc. In fact, they kept the “what’s in the box” game, since in the hatch is a walled-oof area with a strong magnetic pull, so, what’s in the box (walled off area)? Let’s watch to find out…
So, chill dude, you’re missing out on a good show because they did what every other show does: An end of season cliffhanger. By your logic, you would have stopped watching Star Trek Next Generation right when it got good: On the cliffhanger of Best of Both Worlds! Which would have been rather silly of you : )

I don’t mind cliffhangers. But I won’t tolerate them using the same thing as a cliffhanger twice. When you end an
episode with a cliffhanger, you’re obliged to resolve that cliffhanger in the
next episode.
I do still watch Lost now, eventually. I just don’t care very much
about it, and I think it’s far from the best show on TV – it’s been clear to me
for a long time that
they’re making it up as they go along instead of having a well conceived
backstory (and in recent interviews, they’ve admitted as much). In fact, I only
really keep watching because I really, really like
Terry O’Quinn. Without him, I’d stop watching all together. As is, I spend
most of my time hoping that every other character will die – at least that’s
one good thing about the show. And thank god they’re not always
using the “framed flashback” story structure every episode, I
want to kill something whenever they start in on it.
I’ve watched enough shows that never pay off big, and instead string the
watchers along (Twin Peaks anyone?). I’m not going to trust a
show that’s not going to show me some of the backstory in the first season. Alias pulled the same shit, and I won’t get fooled again by the
same people.

Which interview? Javier Grillo-Marxuach, who is one of the producers, has said that they know the backstory for the important stuff (including what the island is, what the monster is, why Flight 815 crashed there, who built the hatch and why, and who the others are and how the came to be on the island).
