Finally, the picks of the week. Alex says, “For people with 4K Blu-Ray capabilities, I’m going with The Magnificent Seven. Otherwise, I’m going with Magnificent Warriors, as a frequently overlooked gem in Michelle Yeoh’s filmography.” Blaine says, “none of the titles I’ve already seen jump out at me.”

One reply

  1. Station Eleven does an excellent job of the novel. Some of the changes arguably improve the plot. Otherwise, the picks are not SF/Fantasy/Horror. Requiem for a Heavyweight holds up, one of Rod Serling’s finest scripts, supported by great actors. Even his original Playhouse 90 episode on which the film is based still packs a punch. Dazed and Confused is problematic, but worth seeing more than once. It captures the late 70s, though it’s the Texas late 70s, and some of those cultural elements were happily unfamiliar to me.

I haven’t seen the Slumber Party Massacre series, but I recall the female directors in a documentary years ago (The Dark Side of Hollywood, I think) talking about accepting the job because they were young and trying to make it, and their conflicting feelings about trying to make the best exploitation films they could.

Remains of the Day is very good, if you like that kind of film.

I will have to track down Silent Avant Garde.
