As usual, the first few weeks of the new year have
very limited options for DVD releases. If you must
buy something this week, go for one of the titles
listed below, but my strongest recommendation is to
wait for better choices.
First, the genre releases:
- Alien
Nation –
The Complete Series: I enjoyed the movie somewhat,
but never
watched the series. - Zone
of the
Enders: The Complete Collection: The full anime
series.
Now, the non-genre releases:
- All
In The
Family – The Complete Fifth Season: There’s no way
they’d make
this series today, even though Archie was clearly and
repeatedly
wrong. - Dumb
and
Dumber (Unrated Edition): This is one of the few
movies I truly
hated. If you don’t think bodily functions are funny,
you’ll be as
bored as I was. - Gunsmoke
–
50th Anniversary Edition: This includes 17
episodes from all 9
seasons. - Have
Gun Will
Travel – Season Three: Another Western. - The
Merv
Griffin Show: 40 of the Most Interesting People of All
Time: This
looks like a “best of” documentary with clips, as it’s
only a three
disk set. - The
Mob Box
Set: Includes Donnie Brasco, Snatch, Bugsy and The
American
Gangster.
Finally, the pick of the week. I’d have to go with
All In The
Family. Season five was past it’s prime, but
there are just so
few options this week that it still takes the top
spot. My strongest
recommendation is actually to save up for the March
releases, which
include the fourth season of Columbo, the
first seasons of
Justice League and Batman Beyond in
the long overdue
full season box sets, and Babylon 5: Legend of the
Rangers.
Pick of the Week
Hey, I have a suggestion – I think you’re allowed to say “There is no pick this week” (;
My pick of the week is to wait for Friday.
Re: Pick of the Week
I say look what’s old and cheap. Bollocks to this “buy it ’cause it’s new” nonsense!
Wedding Crashers
Isn’t Wedding Crashers out Tuesday? That would be my pick of the week.
Re: Wedding Crashers
Yes, it is. I somehow managed to miss that and Broken
Flowers (the latest artistic comedy with Bill Murray)
when I was putting this list together.
Re: Wedding Crashers
I highly recommend it. The trailers make the movie out to be something completely different. It’s actually a touching romance with some genuinely funny gags.
