Another light week ahead. There’s usually a drought
in movie going and movie renting until Valentine’s Day
each year, and release schedules tend to reflect this.
First, the genre releases:
- Eraserhead:
Ah,
David Lynch. Expect the truly bizarre. - The
Flash –
The Complete Series: I loved this series when I
was in junior
high. The bonus episode that came with the latest
season of
Smallville didn’t live up to those memories,
though. - Andromeda:
Season 5, Collection 3: This gets a season five.
I look at the
shows that didn’t, and become totally confused. - Red
Dwarf –
Series 7: If these were more cost effective, I’d
have them all. - Roger
Corman
Puerto Rico Trilogy: Includes Last Woman on
Earth,
Creature From The Haunted Sea, and Battle
of Blood
Island
Now, the non-genre releases:
- The
Bad Sleep
Well: A Criterion Collection release of the
Kurosawa classic. - The
Constant
Gardener: An art film directed by the director of
City of
God. Could be worth a look. - Dead
Poets
Society: This is a special edition release of the
film. - Ferris
Bueller’s Day Off – Bueller Bueller Edition: Spend
the day with
the sausage king of Chicago. - Good
Morning,
Vietnam: Another special edition of a Robin
Williams movie. - The
Magnificent Seven: This is a two disc special
edition. I prefer
the
Kurosawa
original. - Red
Eye: I saw
many ads for this, and still don’t know what it was
about. - Return
of the Pink
Panther: Peter Sellers was in this, from the
original
franchise. - Short
Films of David
Lynch: A collection of shorts from the very
distinctive
director.
Finally, the pick of the week. Ferris Bueller’s
Day Off
takes the title easily, especially since this column
is being written
by a guy who grew up in the 1980s. A true must-see.
The Last Good Red Dwarf
Red Dwarf Season 7 is my pick. This is the last good season when they still didn’t have a big budget. When they brought the entire ship and crew back for season 8 it really kinda ruined the show.
Ferris Bueller is a close second – if I didn’t already have the ‘normal’ edition I’d be getting it.
