Lost Discussion: “Fire + Water”

Charlie’s having surreal dreams — and they’re leading to the baby.

  1. Dissapointing
All in all I was pretty disappointed with this episode.

I really dislike shows with a "wrongly accused" vibe. We also know very little about what Charlie’s visions mean. It would have _meant_ something if the others had taken the baby before it was baptized, or even tried and failed to get the baby. But that didn’t happen and without that external tension, I just think the episode was flat.

  2. losing it’s charm
I didn’t really like the episode. Thing is, I couldn’t really give you a solid reason why.

It had character development, neat visuals, and some subtle clues to the overall plot- yet the whole thing came off very hollow. I guess I’m just getting frustrated about the lack of progression in the main plot threads. They didn’t even touch on any of the meaty stuff!

I don’t think it was such a great episode to leave on right before a break to March sweeps either… but what do I know? :)

  3. hmm…
i dunno, i thought it was a decent enough episode but yeah, in overall story, ie what did we learn about the overall story, it was a bit of a throwaway episode.

however, there are some times episodes that seemingly don’t a lot to do with anything but later are referenced and we find out more about stuff that seemingly didn’t have to do with anything.

Couldn’t agree more. This episode was "filler."

I’d rather go a couple a weeks between new episodes waiting for one that was going to reveal something useful in the ongoing mysteries, or reveal new mysteries.

It is true that we did not learn anything new in this episode about Charlie’s backstory. We knew Charlie’s brother was and addict, Charlie became an addict. They both hit rock bottom and Charlie’s brother got clean and Charlie did not. This episode just filled in some scenes between point A and B.
In the foreground story, we just see Charlie deteriorating and everyone else on the island has now lost trust in him. This may be a set up for some future developements about Charlie.
Outside of that there is some Anna Lucia, the Doc, Sawyer, and Kate love quadrangle developement with Sawyer trying to drive a wedge between Kate and the Doc by pointing out how chummy the Doc is with Anna Lucia now, but is that really necessary? The Doc and Kate seem to be on the outs. The scenes with Doc and Anna Lucia do not tell us anything about the building-an-army plot which is something I would like to hear about.

I am sorry, I was in the middle of writing and I was going to edit this down and spoiler-proof it and accidentally posted. I tried to delete it. If someone with the ability to remove my post would do so I would appreciate it. (Remove this also)

  4. Does JJ have a real story?
I keep wondering whether or not we are just being strung along a la "Alias" and the Rimbaldi arc… It is still not clear to me that JJ Abrams has a real, planned-out, multi-season story to tell – I think he is making it up as he goes along :(

  5. Locke
This episode is re-enforcing my belief that Locke is going to join the "others". I think that at some point (probably a season finale for 2 or 3) its going to be Locke vs Jack and in the end he will leave with several of the castaways to join the others, I think he is trying to bring Claire (and more importantly her baby) with him. A couple of the scenes in "upcoming episodes" teaser adds to this.
