Monthly Comics Picks – April, 2006

The latest issue of Previews just came out. These are
the items that stood out to my eye.

DC Comics

  • ALL STAR BATMAN AND ROBIN, THE BOY WONDER #5 – The
    series marches
on. I should really look up the sales numbers for
    it.
  • SUPERMAN: COVER TO COVER HC – A 240 pages
    hardcover with the cover
art from over 270 issues, plus some material related
    to movies based
    on the character.
  • SUPERMAN #651 – Part three of an eight part story
    cowritten by
    Geoff Johns and Kurt Busiek.
  • ACTION COMICS #838 – Part four of the
    aforementioned story.
  • SUPERMAN/BATMAN #26 – This seems to fill in a role
    such as issue 7
did: Robin and Superboy are dealing with the events of
    Infinite
    Crisis.
  • SUPERMAN VS. LEX LUTHOR TP – A collection that has
    a number of
incarnations of Luthor. Could be interesting.
  • INFINITE CRISIS #7 – The miniseries
    concludes.
  • VILLAINS UNITED: INFINITE CRISIS SPECIAL – More
    aftereffects of
    Infinite Crisis are felt here.
  • CRISIS AFTERMATH: THE BATTLE FOR BLUDHAVEN #1-2 –
    This is a six
issue miniseries that also deals with the after
    effects of the latest
    crisis.
  • GREEN LANTERN #11 – This seems to be dealing with
    the “Emerald
Twilight” story that originally removed Hal from the
    role as Green
    Lantern.
  • ION #1 – Part one of twelve in a series about Kyle
    Rayner, written
    by Ron Marz.
  • SHOWCASE PRESENTS HAUNTED TANK VOL. 1 TP – I’ve
    never even heard
of this one, but I’m not that much of a DC fan.

Marvel Comics

  • ULTIMATE EXTINCTION #4 (of 5) – This series is
    introducing more
than Galactus to the Ultimate universe. It could be
    very
    interesting.
  • ULTIMATE FANTASTIC FOUR #29 – Two words: “Super
    Skrull.” It’ll be
interesting to see Millar’s modernization of that
    Silver Age
    creation.
  • ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN #93 – Guest starring Ultimate
    X-Men and
    Ultimate Deadpool.
  • ULTIMATE WOLVERINE VS. HULK #3 (of 6) – It’s off
    to a good start,
    that’s for sure.
  • ULTIMATE X-MEN #69 – It seems like the Phoenix is
    coming back.
  • ULTIMATES 2 #11 – This title doesn’t seem to slow
    down much.
  • AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #531 – The new costume goes
    through its paces
against Titanium Man. Joe Quesada has assured us that
    JMS has a
definite timeline for the first and last appearances
    of the new
    uniform.
  • FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD SPIDER-MAN #7 – Peter David
    writes a funny
Spider-Man. His series is tempting, but so far, I’ve
    only ordered
    “The Other.”
  • BLACK PANTHER #15 – Leading up to the
    T’Challa/Storm wedding this
    summer.
  • DAREDEVIL #84 – There are MASSIVE spoilers in the
    solicitation
text for this one. Buy the issue, but don’t read the
    description.
  • SQUADRON SUPREME #2 – The reboot continues. I
    can’t wait for this
    to come back.
  • ANNIHILATION – There are three miniseries on the
    way to tie into
the cosmic story, dealing with Ronan, Silver Surfer,
    and Super
    Skrull.
  • FANTASTIC FOUR #537 – This has the return of
    Doctor Doom.
  • NEW AVENGERS #18 – Introducing a new hero, and
    tying into other ones.
  • ASTONISHING X-MEN #14 – This is another one I
    wanted to see return.
  • EXILES #79 – The World Tour is still marching on.
  • UNCANNY X-MEN #472 & #473 – This explains how
    Psylocke returned
    from the dead.
  • WOLVERINE: ORIGINS #1 – Now that Wolverine
    remembers his past,
some people are going to be held accountable for
    it.
  • X-MEN: THE END – MEN AND X-MEN #4 (of 6) – This
    series will
eventually be wrapped up, at which time I’ll review
    all 18 issues.
  • SPIDER-MAN: THE OTHER HC – I’ve ordered this one
    to help get
caught up on Amazing Spider-Man, since I’ve now got
    every issue
leading up to this in one form or another.
  • ASTONISHING X-MEN VOL. 1 HC – Definitely worth it
    if you don’t
    have the individual issues.
  • UNCANNY X-MEN OMNIBUS VOL. 1 HC – This is
    absolutely huge. It’s
    $99.99US, but it’s got UNCANNY X-MEN #94-131 and
    ANNUAL
    #3, and GIANT-SIZE X-MEN #1, all of which I have on
    DVD-ROM.
  • ESSENTIAL WOLVERINE VOL. 4 TPB – I wasn’t that
    thrilled with the
    first three, so I’ll pass.
  • ESSENTIAL X-MEN VOL. 7 TPB – This has “FANTASTIC
    FOUR VS. THE
    X-MEN #1-4” and a bunch of stuff I have on DVD-ROM
    (UNCANNY X-MEN
#214-228 and ANNUAL #10-11), so I’m going to pass.
    It’s tempting,
    but not tempting enough.
  • 40 YEARS OF THE AVENGERS – If you go WAY back to
    the end of the
Previews issue and order form, you’ll find this item
    in the DVD
section. I’m not sure what the collection covers, but
    it’s a safe bet
that it’ll go at least up to Avengers: Disassemble,
    which would mean
I’ll have every issue when my copy arrives.

  1. Haunted Tank
Haunted Tank was a Silver Age series from G.i. Combat in which a Confederate general haunts a World War II-era tank and provides sage advice. Only his descendant can see and hear the general.

The crew last appeared (I think) in Crisis on Infinite Earths.
