Lost Discussion: “One of the Them”

After Sun getting injured, some of the survivors begin to think that one of the “other survivors” might be one of “The Others.” When French woman Danielle Rousseau leads Sayid to a mysterious captive in the jungle, he becomes determined to find out if he is one of the “Others.” Meanwhile, Sawyer discovers Hurley’s potentially devastating breach of the survivors’ trust and blackmails him into helping track an elusive island creature that won’t leave Sawyer alone.

  1. I love the show but…
They really need to stop implying that they are going to reveal something, then not do it. I was fully expecting to find out what happens when the counter hits zero. Yes, we got a little hint (which was very cool), but I was left feeling cheated. Supposedly we’re supposed to find out what happens for real by the end of the season, as well as why the plane crashed. But when they make those promises, I doubt how MUCH they will actually reveal. Like the end of the last season we were promised they’d get the hatch open…which they did. But all we saw was the tunnel going down the hatch.

Even so, I still love the show!

    • Good ol’ reliable nerds

I was fully expecting to find out what happens when the counter hits zero.

When will you learn? : )

Incidently, the internet nerds have been taking screen grabs and checking out their hieroglyph books, and apparently it said "make dead". And there was the noise…

I wonder what kind of compiler they’re using for that! ;-)

I actually like this about the show. It’s the same thing that Alias had going for it, and obviously JJ Abrams know’s what he’s doing with suspense. I can see how it could be annoying, but I like that the show has enough questions to make people all over the world talk about it and try to figure it out. Compare that to…. Friends. It’s a whole different ballgame and I, for one, like it.

  2. Icons / Glyphs

I wonder if the Icons shown at the end will come into play later…

    To me, it looked like:

    finger outline/or paperclip —
    (blank, intentional?) —
    Rocket/ or lavaLamp/Candle —
    Bird —
    UpsideDown Crutch / or Dart/twig —

They seemed to intentionally leave out one, so the complete set may have some significance.

I think some of the symbols resembled Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs. No doubt some watchers will have analysed and torn them to pieces by now, and that’s probably exactly what the writers were after. :)

I looked at the picture and then looked for the signs at this website:
          http://www.jimloy.com/hiero/alpha.htm
          http://www.jimloy.com/hiero/phonetic.htm
          http://www.jimloy.com/hiero/gardner4.htm

The link in the parent connects to some crazy theory about astrological signs. Who knows maybe they are right, but the bird is not a crow. When used as an alphabetical symbol it is a letter ‘A’.
          So assuming they are letters:

The rope shaped thing is an ‘S’.
The second symbol is not clear in the picture but many people think it is a spiral on Wikepedia this is listed as an ‘H’.
The thing that looks like a bomb to me may be the combo sign meaning ‘y’ or ‘ee’ listed as ‘de’
Next is the bird so ‘A’
The arrow shaped thing is not listed as a letter. It shows up in the third link I posted but I cannot determine what it means.

All that gets us is SHyA? or S?YA

Maybe it knows what Said (Sayed?) is doing which would be cool but that is really reaching.

This page from the same website says words beggining with the rope thing are abbreviations meaning ’cause to’ something.
          http://www.jimloy.com/hiero/e-dict15.htm

One of the links in the parent says it means ’cause to die’ which would make sense.

Too bad they don’t have Daniel Jackson on the island, or this would have been cleared up in ten minutes.

But only in the last ten minutes of the show. ;)

  3. Continuity
I like that the writers this week are getting back on track with continuity. We have the return of Delenn, Sayid holding her accountable for the false alarm, and Jack reminding us that he really doesn’t believe in the button. Sayid’s "Have you forgotten?" at the end seemed directed at more than just Charlie. And fan favorite "everyone likes me" Hurley even addresses the ranch dressing expiration problem.

For a while they just seemed to be throwing in new plot elements without moving the old ones along.

  4. Observations
This is stuff pulled from various other messege boards and the chatter around the water cooler today.

As for the sybols, the first 4 are letters and the 5 is a "mood" glyph, which defines how you interpret the word. And it says something to the effect of " cause death ".

Also in the before they were lost they were all connected to each other dept. The soldier in the back of the truck with Saied is the man Kate grew up beliving was her father. In the earlier episode we learn Kate’s story, Saied is on the Television in the army recruiting office

I’ve always had an interest in Egyptian hieroglyphs, and so immediately recognized them for what they were. However, I figured there are far more qualified people out there to translate what they’d seen, so I just decided to wait. But, I still have one concern.

It is highly odd for new symbols to suddenly appear in the type of "flip-over" display on the timer, as the back of "9", for example, has to be "0" and "0" has to be "1", or else you have to have a diffent top-bottom pair of panels for every second. Since the alert panels are red, it is even more unlikely that the timer has 6481 (108×60+1) pairs and we just missed them as it resets. Red stands out.

  5. Holy plot!
Questions Sayid should have asked (spoilered just in case)
You say you have been living in a cave on the beach for four months – what have you been doing for fresh water, especially since you’d claimed to have been walking in the jungle for two days, weren’t carrying any water, and weren’t dehydrated? Why don’t you need a shave, or a haircut? – even if you did have grooming supplies in your balloon why keep it up after your wife died? And most importantly, if you were keeping a lookout for flyovers, why didn’t you notice the plane crash? Or did you notice it and decide not to check it out?

    • Re: Holy plot!
Those are brilliant questions! I think Sayid got what he needed with the burial question. There was definitely a look exchanged between Sayid and the captive as Sayid left the locker. However, in getting as emotional as he did, he showed weakness to his interrogatee, which ruins his tough interrogator image and thus any chances of further interrogation.

I think the beatdown was there to bring back the "bad cop" persona : )

  6. hierogliphs
Someone called syagrius posted a hyperlink about the first sybol meaning cause to do something. They also said that the second symbol looked like a swirl. Assuming this, on the hyperlinked page there is word with four symbols that are the same as the first three but with a different one on the end. It says it means cause to bring down. I don’t know if it means the same without the last sybol, but just thought i’d mention it.
