Monthly Comics Picks – May, 2006

Once again, my selections are below.

DC Comics

  • CATWOMAN #55 – The solicitations still talk about
    “The New
Catwoman” without revealing who she is. She’ll be
    going to a JSA
member for training, so she’s probably pretty new at
    the hero game.
I’m interested in how this will play out.
  • ROBIN #150 – It sounds like a big culmination
    issue for the #150.
  • BATMAN: UNDER THE HOOD VOL. 2 TP – Continuing DC’s
    recent trend of
advance solicitation, this TPB continues the Red Hood
    story and is due
    in June.
  • SUPERMAN RETURNS: THE MOVIE ADAPTATION – Advance
    solicited for
    July 6.
  • ALL STAR SUPERMAN #4 – Morrison and Quietly
    continue their run.
  • SUPERMAN #652 – Kurt Busiek and Geoff Johns are
    collaborating on
the writing. I admit, that peaks my interest.
  • ACTION COMICS #839 – Again, Johns and Busiek.
  • SUPERMAN/BATMAN #27 – Mark Verheiden takes over
    the writing with
    this issue.
  • SHOWCASE PRESENTS: SUPERMAN VOL. 2 TP – More
    Silver Age Superman.
Volume one is being resolicited; I’ll try to get that
    reviewed before
    it comes out again.
  • SUPERGIRL #8 – Greg Rucka is on the writing now.
    I enjoyed the
Superman/Batman arc that introduced her, so I’m
    tempted to pick this
up. I’ll probably try for the TPBs first, possibly
    with this next
    item:
  • SUPERGIRL: POWER TP – Collecting Jeph Loeb’s run.
    It’s advance
solicited for June 14, so I’ll probably look at the
    June solicitations
and then decide if I want to add this to the
    list.
  • CRISIS AFTERMATH: THE SPECTRE #1 – A three issue
    miniseries with
    the Spectre’s new host.
  • 52: WEEKS 1-4 – This is an ambitious project. 52
    weekly issues
written in collaboration by Grant Morrison, Geoff
    Johns, Greg Rucka
and Mark Waid that cover the time between “Infinite
    Crisis” and “One
Year Later.” It’s been revealed that Superman, Batman
    and Wonder
Woman will not be present during that year. This
    could be a very
interesting project. Still, even at $2.50 an issue,
    it adds up over a
year. Picking this up would be like adding four
    titles to my pull
list, so I think I’ll have to pass.
  • GREEN LANTERN #12 – The Cyborg Superman is back,
    so this could
have a lot of anger involved on Hal’s part.
  • GREEN LANTERN CORPS: RECHARGE TP – Collecting the
    five issue
series that I’ll review upon completion. It’s advance
    solicited for
    June as well.
  • ION #2 – The Ron Marz 12 issue series
    continues.
  • SECRET SIX #1 – Gail Simone continues what she
    started in
    “Villains United” last year.

Marvel Comics

  • ULTIMATE EXTINCTION #5 (of 5) – This completes
    this series.
  • ULTIMATE FANTASTIC FOUR #30 – A new story arc,
    with the return of
    Doctor Doom.
  • ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN #94 and 95 – Issue 94 wraps up
    the Deadpool
arc, and issue 95 kicks off the Ultimate Morbius arc.
    Issue 95 is
part 1 of 5, so issue 100 should be either stand-alone
    or the start of
    a new storyline.
  • ULTIMATE X-MEN #70 – It’s the continuation of the
    Phoenix story
    arc.
  • AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #532 – Part one of the Civil
    War tie-in
    storyline.
  • CIVIL WAR #1 (of 7) – Mark Millar and Steve
    McNiven are kicking
off Marvel’s summer event. It’s an interesting
    concept, with the
Registration Act that has been plaguing the X-Men for
    so long being
expanded out to include all supers. I’ll be picking
    it up.
  • SHE-HULK #8 – A Civil War tie-in.
  • WOLVERINE #42 – A Civil War tie-in.
  • FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD SPIDER-MAN #8 – Peter David
    and Mike
    Wieringo continue their run.
  • SENSATIONAL SPIDER-MAN #26 – Part four of five of
    “Feral.”
  • DAREDEVIL #85 – Brubaker’s run continues.
  • FANTASTIC FOUR – A DEATH IN THE FAMILY – ONE-SHOT
    – This could be worthwhile. I’m picking it up, as
    there’s no regular
    FF title this month.
  • FOUR #30 – The final issue of this series.
  • NEW AVENGERS #19 – Warning, there are more
    spoilers here.
  • SQUADRON SUPREME #3 – I’m really looking forward
    to this
    relaunch.
  • INCREDIBLE HULK #95 – The Planet Hulk story
    continues.
  • EXILES #80 and 81 – More World Tour stuff. Chris
    Claremont
replaces Tony Bedard as writer with issue 84.
  • UNCANNY X-MEN #473 – Part 2 of 3 of Claremont’s
    last story arc for
    a while.
  • X-MEN: THE END – MEN AND X-MEN #5 (of 6) – This is
    almost done as
    well.
  • ESSENTIAL CLASSIC X-MEN VOL. 2 – Includes Uncanny
    X-Men #25-53 and
    Avengers #53.

One reply

  1. Star Wars: Legacy
Dark Horse Comics is releasing a new monthly series named Star Wars: Legacy. Issue #0 is slated to come out in May and should be in this month’s Previews.

The timeframe is about 100 years in the future of the New Jedi Order–which in turn is about 20 years after Return of the Jedi. The Sith have returned, there’s an "all new empire," and one of the main main characters is Cade Skywalker, an ex-Jedi who has renounced his heritage and turned to a life of smuggling. There’s also an impressive picture of what looks like a Twi’lek Darth Maul.

The initial announcement, as well as pictures and more information, can be found here.
