Lost Discussion: “Maternity Leave”

A mysterious illness that baby Aaron suddenly contracts sends a desperate Claire, Kate and French woman Danielle to return to the same area where Claire was initially kidnapped. It is there where she believes she can find a cure for Aaron’s illness. In the meantime, Jack and Locke are doing their best to keep their prisoner a secret from the rest of the survivors on the island.

  1. Eko’s confession
Eko’s confession to the prisoner was really strange. I took it to indicate that Eko is pretty sure he’s one of the others.

But, that had to be one of the scariest confessions I’d ever seen. Eko rocks. It came across to me like "I can be a really violent person and killed two of your others, and I’m sorry. Rembember , I can be a really violent person."

Yeah, I liked that, too. Between that, the way Mr. Stranger pushed Locke’s buttons, and the "look" he gave last time, it’s almost certain he is one of the Others.

Was it just me or was it just a tad obvious. I’m thinking Locke is just playing along.

No way, this is all part of the big setup by the producers. Locke vs Jack. I have been sure of it since the middle of the first season Locke is going to join the others.

I’m *hoping* Locke is just playing along, because all I had in my mind when I heard Henry throw that line was "see through it Locket, see through it". Locke is too badass to fall for a cheap try like that!

Depends. Locke’s book, "The Brothers Karamazov" by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, is a tale of family rivalry and patricide that is regarded as being one of, if not the, best of his works. That’s a pretty good clue about where we are going even without backing it up with the discussion about Hemmingway and his feelings about his rival.

Question is, was Locke trying to put ideas into Henry’s head with the book to try and draw him out as one of the others, or are the writers just dropping us a hint? The patricide bit is interesting – we still don’t know what ultimately happened to Locke’s father, if anything, or how he ended up in his wheel chair. I think we’re about to see two parallel Locke threads; one about his rivalry and some form of revenge against his father and another with Jack – the "Locke problem" that he mentioned to Kate.

  2. Another Observation
Was this the first episode ever to not have any before crash flashbacks?

I know Claire had flashbacks to her time with the other, but I’m not counting that. They’ve had Sayid flashback to his time with Russo.

I don’t think the people that kidnapped Claire (Ethan and company) are the same group everybody calls ‘the others’.
The others looked pretty scruffy and such, more like a different set of people that had been lost on the island.
I think Ethan and company are part of the original Dharma crowd.

You obviously didn’t see the whole episode. There’s one scene where Kate stumbles into a locker room full of scruffy clothes and a box with spirit gum and a fake beard. Earlier in the episode we see a clean-cut older man talking to Ethan who sounds just like the bearded guy that was leading the Others when they traded Kate for the guns.

It was in fact, the exact same actor.

I forgot to mention before, because I assumed everyone already knew, he’s the same guy from when the raft was blown up….

I did notice that his beard out on the boat in the season 1 finale and when he was in the jungle with the others a few weeks ago looked very different (much more puffy than when we first saw him). So the fact that it was actually a disguise makes perfect sense.
