Premise

A spaceship crash lands in a valley girl’s swimming
pool in this 1988
sci-fi musical sex comedy.

High Point

It’s a tough decision. The “Worship The Ground You
Walk On” number
must have been fun to film, even though it’s not
nearly as well known
as “Cause I’m A Blonde.” I think the best moment
would be when Val is
commenting on how good the air quality is today, while
Zeebo and
Wiploc are choking and gagging.

Low Point

The dream sequence. Even a guest shot by Robbie the
Robot couldn’t
save it.

The Scores

It’s hard to deny originality in a 1980s teen
sex comedy
that’s also a science fiction musical. Seriously, how
many movies
combine even two of those genres, let alone all three?
The remake of
Little Shop of Horrors managed two of them,
but not the
third. I give it 5 out of 6.

The effects are pretty lousy, with matte
lines and support
wires often visible, and very poor compositing in many
cases. I give
it 2 out of 6.

The story is minimal and predictable. Apart
from the genre
blend, there’s not much that’s new here. I give it 3
out of 6.

The acting has one rather surprising aspect:
Jim Carrey is
actually convincing. Who knew that all you had to do
in order to make
him fit a role was to cast him as a horny guy with
absolutely no
understanding of how to integrate with society? The
other performers
were similarly over the top. I give it 4 out of 6.

The emotional response isn’t bad. If you go
in expecting
something designed to be fun and funny, and in no way
brilliant, then
you’ll be quite pleased. There are some genuine
laughs to be had. I
give it 5 out of 6.

The production is pretty pedestrian. There
were no real
errors, but there were no interesting or unusual
choices, either.
Still, it’s standard movie direction, coming from a
director whose
credits before and after are in the music video line.
It could have
been much worse. I give it 4 out of 6.

Overall, it’s fun, mindless entertainment,
and and
interesting combination of cast and genres. I give it
4 out of 6.

In total, Earth Girls Are Easy receives 27
out of 42.

Next Week

It appears that I’ve been rather efficient in
reviewing certain portions of the alphabet. As you
know, these Saturday reviews are just the unreviewed
movies in my collection, reviewed in alphabetical
order. (The exceptions are for horror material, which
gets saved for Halloween, and superhero material,
which is being set aside due to the glut of hero stuff
we review anyway.) Well, I’ve already reviewed all
such genre material for the next few letters of the
alphabet. Next week’s review will be of Logan’s
Run
.

  1. A Hot Davis
This Is About the Only Movie I’ve Seen That they Made Geena Davis Look Hot In, And That Only Adds To The Other Stuff In The Movie. I Remember How Kewl It Was When I Figure Out The Alien Language Is Just English Words, Spoken Backwards.

All In All, DEfinitely One Of My Favorite Movies.

This Is About the Only Movie I’ve Seen That they Made Geena Davis Look Hot In,

She was pretty hot in her underwear in Tootsie.
