We’re getting into spring (in most of the populated
parts of the northern half of the world), and that
means the DVD releases are starting to get better.
First, the genre releases:
- 12:01
–
Special Edition: I keep hearing about this movie
from film lovers,
but I’ve never seen it. - Baby
Looney
Tunes, Volumes 1 and 2: This was an amusing
series. - The
Easter
Bunny Is Comin’ To Town: Why didn’t someone tell
me there’s a
Rankin/Bass Easter special? - The
Flintstones – The Complete Fifth Season: There
were only six
seasons of the show’s run, so it should be finished in
time for
Christmas. - Gene
Roddenberry’s Andromeda Season Five, Collection
Four: I don’t
remember how many seasons this series ran. - Harry
Potter
and the Goblet of Fire: This link is to the two
disk special
edition. - The
Hills Have
Eyes: Wes Craven directed. - Howl’s
Moving
Castle: Nominated for the 2005 Best Animated
Oscar. - My
Neighbor
Totoro: More Miyazaki goodness.
Now, the non-genre releases:
- The
Brady
Bunch – The Fifth and Final Season: Thus ends the
family
favourite. - Buster
Keaton
– 65th Anniversary Collection: Keaton is my
all-time favourite
screen comedian. Great, great stuff. - The
Bill Cosby
Show – Season Two: This was great when it
launched. - Fallen
Angel: More Fox film noir. - Free
Enterprise: Now this is funny. - Hogan’s
Heroes
– Complete Third Season: This was a fun
series. - The
House on
Telegraph Hill: Film noir directed by Robert
Wise. - Jarhead
–
Collector’s Edition: A war movie directed by Sam
Mendes. - The
John Wayne
Ultimate Film Collection: 25 movies for $21. That
seems
disturbingly cheap… - No
Way
Out: Fox film noir. - Police
Woman –
Complete First Season: Another 70s cop drama. - The
Spike Lee
Join Collection: Includes Clockers,
Jungle
Fever, Do The Right Thing, Mo’
Better Blues,
and Crooklyn. - Traffic
–
Criterion Collection: This is a rerelease, but a
good one.
Finally, the pick of the week. I’d have to go with
Traffic. It was just a very good movie, with
excellent stylistic qualities that Soderbergh is so
good at.
Studio Ghibli releases…
You mention _Howl’s Moving Castle_ and _Totoro_. However, _Whisper Of The Heart_ is also being released by Disney this week along with the other two, and it’s an even better bet than Howl.
