2006 Razzie Winners

As always, the winners of the “Golden Raspberry”
Awards were announced
the day before the Academy Award winners. A summary
is below.

  • Dirty
    Love
received awards for worst picture, worst
actress (Jenny McCarthy), worst screenplay (also Jenny
McCarthy), and worst director (John Asher).
  • Rob Schneider took home the worst actor razzie for
    his work in Deuce
    Bigalow: European Gigolo
    .
  • Hayden Christensen won the worst supporting actor
    award for Star
Wars: Episode III: Revenge of the Sith
    . While his
performance certainly wasn’t Oscar worthy, I’m not
sure it should be worth a razzie, either.
  • Paris Hilton won the worst supporting actress award
    for the remake
    of House of Wax
, which was a remake of Mystery
    of the Wax Museum
    .
  • Nicole Kidman and Will Ferrell took home the razzie
for worst screen couple based on their work in Bewitched.
  • Son
    of the Mask
won the razzie for worst remake or
    sequel.
  • This year also featured the new “most tiresome tabloid
targets” award, which went to Tom Cruise, Katie
Holmes, Oprah Winfrey’s Couch, The Eiffel Tower, and
    “Tom’s Baby.”

I find it more than mildly amusing that most Oscar
nominated films are either not on DVD, or were rushed
to DVD with a release date that’s close to the Oscar
broadcast, while every Razzie nominated film is
available at Amazon.com and ready to ship in 24 hours.

  1. Noooooooooooooooooooooooo!
I suppose Hayden’s Razzie-worthiness would depend on whether or not he delivered the notorious monosyllabic line.

Sorry, that line was delivered by Darth (er James Earl Jones) himself.

I consider it gratifying that the organisers of the Razzies were brave enough to give Christensen one. His acting was attrocious, and all hype/fandom aside, I’ve always tended to consider the Star Wars films in general to be grossly over-rated.

I don’t consider George Lucas the directorial legend that he’s made out to be, either. In the area of special effects, and only special effects, then yes. The romantic elements in Attack of the Clones’ script however were terrible, and a lot of people have written about Lucas’ obvious inability to work with actors, as demonstrated in the latter two prequels, as well.

George Lucas is not close to a billionaire because he’s a great director. Rather, he’s become rich for largely the same reasons that the Kroc family did. Star Wars is McDonaldised film; it’s relentlessly mainstream, homogenised, and easy to swallow; the proverbial lowest-common-denominator stuff. In terms of artistic nutritional content though, it’s also identical to McDonald’s. You’d get the same nutritional value from cardboard; it’s just that McDonald’s tastes better.

      • Re: Noooooooooooooooooooooooo!
Definitely, if this film gets a nod, it should be for screenplay or a special achievement award to Lucas for developing an impressive franchise and then turning it into a joke. It’s too bad, because Lucas’s early work– American Graffiti and even the original Star Wars— demonstrate ingenuity and a willingness to take chances. The recent films mainly demonstrate an understanding of technology and mass marketing.

  2. but master obi-wan thinks i’m not ready…
I think managing to make Anakin Skywalker even more whiny than Luke earns him a Razzie, yeah.

  3. If Sith deserves a Razzie…
If Sith deserves a Razzie, it should have gotten worst director. I have either seen or heard about how each of these actors has turned in completely competent performances in other movies, and then came to Sith and, well, you’ve seen the movie.

But, to tell you the truth, if I were going to pick one of the three for a Razzie, it’s not this one.
