Upcoming Review List finally updated

The list of upcoming reviews that I haven’t updated in
ages has finally been updated at same
old URL
that it used to be at. Please let me know
if you ever refer to it; it just took me seven hours
to do, and I plan to update the grossly outdated schedule
next month. That won’t take quite as long, but it’s
not a short job, either, so I want to know that it’s
worthwhile before I start it.

I hope Primer gets some loving soon. I’ve been requesting that for like a year now :)

It’s planned for May 20. The Saturday reviews are the non-superhero, non-horror movies I had when we started the reviews last December, in alphabetical order, and that includes Primer after the original Planet of the Apes and before Princess Bride. The scheduled reviews cover up to September 9, at which point the Saturday runs may take a break so we can start prepping for Halloween again. (This year’s Halloween run should include reviews of Waxworks, The Golem, two versions of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, three versions of House of Wax, Them!, The Blob, Night of the Living Dead, and possibly others.) I’ve got a schedule worked up, but haven’t posted it since I tend to rewrite the Halloween bits, and I’m tempted to pull Sword in the Stone, the Toy Story movies, and Princess Mononoke off the Saturday schedules in favour of a more inclusive animation series later in the summer, if I can find the time to work that far ahead. (If so, it’ll include Aladdin, The Lion King, Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride, Howl’s Moving Castle, and potentially others as well.) I also left the 1938 version of A Christmas Carol off the schedule to review closer to Christmas.

Mainly thinking out loud here but I’ve always hoped you guys would archive the reviews into a neat database of sorts kind of like the game review database at shacknews.com (http://www.shacknews.com/reviews/).

I’ve discovered a lot of enjoyable media and books based solely on a B:42 review and it’s somewhat disheartening not being able to go back and discuss it further after the fact since topics that scroll off the page never really get any further comments.

Perfect example is the Astro City volumes which I actually hunted for after reading the review then went back to comment :(

That would be more like a forum or bulletin board I guess – but one can still dream!

Y’know, on more than one occasion I’ve thought of just replacing all my hand-written code with a PunBB installation and leaving it at that. The big downside is that automatically importing everything that’s been written over the last four or five years would be so many different kinds of "pain in the ass," and I think there’s too much history here.

Anyone here do data conversion and wanna make a few bucks? :)

It’s an inelegant solution, but I’ve been maintaining this list of every review we’ve ever written with the 42 point system. You can find Astro City: Life In The Big City without taking up too much time by jumping to the "comics" section and looking alphabetically, or using your browser’s "find" feature.

It’s not so much finding the reviews, the search function on this site works very well actually. It’s more that the "discussion" usually ends when the article scrolls off the front page and there isn’t really a "latest" comment thing to bring anyone’s attention to it.

But judging by "Current Headlines" I’m not sure if it would be a useful feature :P

I pretty much follow through the RSS feed these days. (I use Bloglines.) Does the feed still update for comments on articles off the front page? I haven’t noticed. If so, that would help keep discussions alive somewhat.

If you check the "Site Stats" link on the left, you’ll find that the 20 most recent comments are listed there. I check there often, but I don’t know how many others do.

I use bloglines as well, so I know when a discussion is updated. The problem I was having was keeping track of new posts vs old ones. I didn’t know about that "Site Stats" link. Now that I do, it will make it a lot easier to keep up to date with long discussions such as the recent BSG ones.

How about having a "most recent posts" for each thread? I would find that extremely useful.

                  • No, I’m not the one to code it, but…
A Recent Comments list, similar to the Current Headlines list, would really keep discussion going on certain topics. I’ve reread a couple of the old BSG reviews and discussion now that I’m watching the show, and (given the current situation) didn’t see much point in posting.

"Recent Comments" is (arguably) covered in the stats page, which has a list of the most recent comments.

I’m trying to work out the least-painful (in terms of SQL query usage) way to do a copy of the front page that lists articles by most recent comments. I’m not there yet, but I’ve got notions on the matter.
