Lost Discussion: “Lockdown”

When the hatch suddenly takes on a life of its own, Locke is forced to enlist the help of an unlikely ally to control the matter. Meanwhile, Ana Lucia, Sayid and Charlie go off into the jungle to find out the truth about Henry Gale and see if there really is balloon craft out there in the jungle that carried him and his wife to the island.

I think everyone knew that Henry Gale was lying… even after the baloon was found. That guy has some ‘splainin to do. They’re also starting to ratchet up the competition between Sawyer and Jack. Pretty amusing game of poker.

I wish I had a screenshot of what was on the hatch internal door when the lights went blue. Looked like a schematic written in invisible ink or something.

Oh my god. Everyone’s going to spend weeks figuring out what all that means and then arguing over it. Awesome.

So if the medical station is where the Tailies took refuge, and the Swan station is the one the "original" survivors found, then they really have a lot of island left to discover. The drawing puts the Swan and the Medical Staff pretty close to one another, but the Tailies (with Jin, Sawyer, and Walt) had quite a trek through the jungle to meet up with the beach group.

Wouldn’t it be more likely that the medical section be where Claire was taken? I think it more likely that the Tailies were in the bunker adjacent to it that has been scribbled out, perhaps to indicate it was empty when explored. That would seem to indicate that whoever drew that map was looking for something specific, "the flame" perhaps, in what looks like it might have at one point been a series of scientific research labs established by Dharma.

I was pretty sure we saw the Staff on the door when the Tailies welcomed in Walt and Company. Although, now that you mention it, maybe it was on the door that Kate opened.

Does anybody know if the Apollo symbolism still holds, now that we know more about the Dharma logos?

Yes, the medical hatch is where Claire was taken. The same Caduceus staff symbol on the map was on the door of that hatch.

You are correct that the Tailies were in the arrow hatch, which is at the top of the map, to the right of the one that has been scibbled out. In the episode where Michael, Jin and Sawyer are taken to the Tailie’s hatch, you can see the arrow symbol on the wall in the background.

My guess is that the one that is scribbled out is a hatch that was destroyed. Possibly during "the incident" that happened at sometime in the past?

There are a few out there. Here are the links to them. The second one is getting hammered I think, but it eventually comes up if you keep refreshing the page.

Those are great links. It is hard to resist analyzing them.

I think it is obvious that cerebus is the black cloud. Cerebus was the guard dog of the underworld.

The food they found at the end of the episode could be one of the P.R.D’s the periodic ration drop. It mentions that there are deaths after the drops. Maybe the plague is sprayed out during the ration drop? Some kind of way to balance out the ecosystem? You give food=population growth so spread disease at the same time to kill off some population? Maybe a random sample of the rations are infected? I think some of the castaways are going to die in the next couple shows.

The mention of weather control and magnetic rocks could be what is causing various crashes into the island. Whatever is in control can use the weather control to suck in pirate ships, airplanes, and baloons.

There is a note near the top that the region cannot be explored because they cannot get there and back within the 108 minutes. This supports Desmond painting the map, not a pair of earlier people like I thought. But where did Desmond get all this info? Maybe Desmond just added to the map after he found it.

There is a mention of the polar bears which is neat.

All the chambers seem to have tunnels pointed to a central location that is blocked off. Parts of the hatch are walled off. Maybe the rest are like that. Maybe there is a large control room in the center or all the facilities are powered by geothermal energy and the center is a Volcano (lots of Pacific islands were volcanic).

I think the medical center is the place they took Claire to have the baby. It is not that far away. The people from the tail found only a simple room, a dead end. I think that is one from the far side of the octagon.

There seem to be a "hatch" at each vertex of the octagon but the hatch with the button takes up two vertexes. Of the two hatches opposite the "button" hatch (The Swan), one is crossed out. Maybe the is another large complex at that side that takes up two vertexes, like the Swan. I would suspect that is where the others live, unless they live in the control center in the middle. So there should be at least 6 hatches or possibly 7 if the top 2 = 1 like the Swan does (which explains why one is scratched out).

Where does the French lady live? In a hatch or a cave? I don’t remember.

The pirate ship is mentioned at the lower right. That should give them an idea of the orientation and scale of the map, along with Claire’s medical center.

Now we will have to see if Locke tells anyone else about the map (probably not Jack) and if they figure out a way to see it again.

Well, like the other post said, lots of food for thought, stuff to argue about.

My guess is they’ll probably let everyone forget about it and only bring it up again at some point next season.

          Close, but not quite.

Cerberus is the guard dog of the underworld.
Cerebus is Dave Sim’s aardvark comic book hero.

Cerebus the Aardvark was supposed to be named Cerberus, but in an ‘origins of Cerebus’ article, Sim wrote that he was too involved in the drawing to notice that he’d spelled it wrong until too late. The name Cerebus stuck, because it rolls off the tongue.

            Ha ha, that’s funny.

            I spelled it wrong.
The "official" picture spelled it "Cerberus".
The other picture spelled it wrong like I did.

I assume in the original, Desmond, or whomever, spelled it correctly.

Whether it named after an Aarvark or a three headed dog I think it is the black cloud that blows up trees.

I also noticed that the map notes it is most active between the hatch and the ship where they got the dynamite. Locke was dragged into a hole on the way to the ship. I think the black cloud comes from that area and does laps around the island.

Actually, Locke was dragged into the hole on the way to the hatch, which is why they already had the dynamite to throw into the hole. Good observation, otherwise.

My guess is the lights were ultraviolet, the same you use to verify the authenticity of money, and the schematic was written in an ink that only shows up under ultraviolet. The question is, why did whoever draw it draw it so that it won’t be seen unless there’s another lockdown, assuming the UV light always comes with the lockdown?

I would guess that Desmond drew that map. At the bottom of one is "I AM HERE" pointing to the Swan station. Of course the question remains, if he drew it, why?

Maybe someone before him. Maybe he added on previous work…

The freaky part is, how often do you get locked in there? And for how long? Is it on a regular cycle? Every 108 cycle? I mean, a hand drawn map in fluorescent ink is not a spur of the moment thing.
And this plays well in the ‘psychological experiment’ part of the hatch mystery. It’s a good mind game to play of your guinea pigs to keep them worried. A big, scary security system that clamours that it’s checking that everything works. I can see Desmond tearing out the speaker though…. once he got used to the cycle…

          • Re: good episode

I believe the fact that a supply drop happened at the same time that the lockdown happened is not a coincidence. I think the garbled speech coming out of the speakers was a set of instructions about the supply drop.

What I cannot figure out was whether the system was locking the people in to stop them from getting hit on the head when the supplies fell out of the sky (unlikely), or was it locking them out so that the two people that are supposed to be manning the hatch can go out and search for the supply drop and not have to worry about someone else sneaking in while they were out.

I am sure the announcement and lockdown is connected to the supply drop but I do not know how or why.
            ….
If Desmond did draw the map he must have had some other source of information instead of direct observation (maybe he chatted on the computer like Michael?).

The map seems like it is one of many "decorations" painted on the walls, but whoever did it had time to explore the island. There are many other hatches detailed on the map and Desmond was stuck alone in the hatch and could not explore for more than 108 minutes at a time.

When there were two people in the hatch, before Desmond, then they could have taken turns exploring, or maybe they were drawing from memory from some time before they were stationed in the hatch, maybe during an orientation after they first got to the island. I could see them going to one hatch to see the film and be trained, another hatch where they were given a medical exam, another where they signed legal releases etc. Oh well. We’ll see after two or three seasons.

Why do you assume the drop just happened? It could have been there a long time and they just hadn’t seen it. Don’t you think people desperate to get home would be keen on any aircraft that would have to slow enough above them to drop off supplies?

                * The supply drop was on the way from the camp to the hatch. People would have seen it while walking back and forth to the hatch before.
                * The strobe must have had a battery. The battery would not last forever. I would design something like that to last a week, maybe two. It could not have been flashing since before they got to the island (>40 days) as it would need to be if it had been there forever.

                Arguements against these points:
                * The strobe made it visible at night and you could say they only went to the hatch during the day and had not yet seen the light but I think that someone would have been there at night. Besides, a strobe can also be seen during the day it is just easier at night.
                * The supply drop may have been there for years and was only activated by some signal from the hatch, maybe automatic or maybe triggered by the "others" secret plant: baloon guy.

The latter is getting paranoid. If you get paranoid then you could say the supply drop didn’t come from the air, it was dragged there by the "others". Or it came up out of the ground through some secret tunnels like they have at Disneyland. Or the supplies aren’t really there, they are an illusion from mind control beams etc. etc.

The simplest solution is that the supllies are dropped periodically and the hatch is set to do what it did when the supllies drop.

                  two words: solar power

Exactly. There’s also the fact that they seem to march along looking at the ground, so as to follow what little path there is. Also, without Kate’s interruption, there would be little reason for Jack, or anyone else, to stop and look around.

The simplest solution is that the supllies are dropped periodically and the hatch is set to do what it did when the supllies drop.

I won’t deny that the coincidence is too logical to ignore.

That’s the most logical reason in my opinion. I can’t imagine the show’s creators making everything so complicated. Some things can be that simple.

Maybe someone has a nice enough image to compare handwriting. Of course, I still can’t see how they’ve been able to read what they have.

I spotted something else too having watched it again; when the lockdown occurs the faux window behind the dining table gets sealed off as well. I’d always assumed that was just a backlit piece of semi-translucent material, but combining the blastdoor coming down with the comment about "escape tunnels" on the schematic and I think taking a peek behind there could be… interesting.
