A prequel to Battlestar Galactica is on the drawing board at Sci-Fi. Set fifty years before the current series, the Colonies are on the verge of a breakthrough – the first Cylon.
And the title? Caprica, of course. Are the other Colonies ever going to get a look-in?

The show lacks the developed/suggested backstory of certain other franchises, and it’s currently one of the best things on tv, so I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt. However, we have ample evidence that the success of an original does not equal success with its prequels.
Personally, I wish they’d focus on keeping on show good instead of milking it with spin-offs, three years into its run. I’d hate to think that in a couple years we’ll be complaining about how they botched this, and how the forthcoming Adama and Tigh: The Early Years fills us with trepidation.

It sounds relatively promising to me, but why oh why do prequels always have to focus on the ancestors of the original series’ lead? The genesis of the Cylons should be more than enough for the story without a) risking continuity and b) the inevitable barrage of nudge-nudge, wink-winks to the Adamas of the future.

I sincerely hope not. To be honest, I don’t think we should see young versions of any current BSG characters. The point of this series should be to flesh out the back story of the universe itself – BSG can provide character back story as and when it’s required.

It’s set 50 years before, so Bill Adama’s about the only character who’s old enough to be out of nappies in it. This is encouraging.

Now that you mention it, ancestral appearances in Caprica would kind of be a giveaway of people who aren’t Cylons. Or they could really drop the bomb and have say, Gaius Baltar show up, confirming y42’s Cylon One theory.

Why am I filled with dread? It seems very much like its aimed to be a "BSG-lite", aimed more at the Friends / Desperate Housewives audience.

But a bad spin-off can lower the value of the brand (Trek *cough*). I’d hate to see budget cuts or something on the original series if this goes south.
If this was a miniseries or 2 hour movie I’d have more faith in it.

They were made to make life easier in the Colonies; that’s fairly strongly established early on in the series. Then they got smart, rebelled (nobody seems to really know why), fought a very nasty war and then went off to their own homeworld.
If they decide the prequel’s going too light, I think they can easily darken it – if it goes as far as the Cylon war, it’s going to get pretty dark pretty quickly.
