With summer imminent, things are once again becoming
interesting in the area of video releases.
First, the genre releases:
- 3rd
Rock From
The Sun – Season Four: This show had its moments,
when you could
find it on the schedule. - Andromeda
–
Season 5, Collection 5: The series continues
somehow. - Delicatessen:
From what I’ve heard, this is Jeunet’s best film.
Since Jeunet also
made Amelie, that’s a mighty high
standard. - Dinosaurs
–
Complete First and Second Season: Not the
momma! - Hoodwinked:
Man,
that didn’t take long to reach DVD. - King
of Kong
Island and Other Ape Movies: $7 for nine movies on
3 DVDs. You
just know they’ll be great. - Red
Dwarf
VIII: The last season. Also comes in a version
with a Scutter
Toy. I’m
hoping for an eight season box set.
Now, the non-genre releases:
- Bad
News
Bears: The recent version with Billy Bob
Thornton. - Broadway’s
Lost Treasures Collection: Mother’s Day isn’t too
far off. - Charles
Dickens Collection: BBC adaptations of “The Old
Curiosity Shop,”
“David Copperfield,” and “Nicholas Nickleby.” - The
Family
Stone: It’s got a cast, that’s for sure. - I
Love Lucy –
The Complete Sixth Season: Was this the
Vitameataveggimin year? - The
Jackie
Collins 2 Pack: Listed to aid your Mother’s Day
shopping. - Kate
and Allie
– The Complete First Season: It’s a good day for
Jane Curtain fans. - King
of the
Hill – Complete Sixth Season: I’ve watched a
couple, and don’t
understand the appeal. - Last
Holiday: Queen Latifah as a shy woman. That’ll be
hard to pull
off. - Leave
it to
Beaver – Complete Second Season: The first show to
ever put a
toilet on TV. They could only show the tank,
though. - The
Lucy and
Desi Collection: Three movies they made together.
Includes
Too Many Girls, The Long, Long
Trailer, and
Forever, Darling. - The
Nanny –
Complete Second Season: Man, was her voice
shrill. - Red
Green –
The 1997 Season: This series just ended, and I
missed the finale.
I’ll have to keep an eye out for reruns. It was one
year behind
The Simpsons for the longest running show on
the air. - The
Tennessee
Williams Collection: Includes the new editions of
A Streetcar
Named Desire, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof,
Sweet Bird of
Youth, Night of the Iguana, Baby
Doll, and
The Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone. - Trailer
Park
Boys – Seasons One and Two: This is probably not
for Mother’s
Day. - Ultimate
Film
Noir Collection: A five DVD set with several
films, including the
well known D.O.A. and the Lang-directed
Scarlet
Street among others. - Wyatt
Earp: A single disk edition.
Finally, the pick of the week. I’d have to go with
Red Dwarf
VIII. The guitar strings alone are hilarious.
I’m hoping that
movie they’ve been talking about finally gets off the
ground.
Back! Back Evil One!
Thanks to TiVo, I thought the days of waiting for reruns were a distant memory. Having used one (owned by a roommate), I’ll never go back. Believe me, it’s definitely worth the cost.
Re: Back! Back Evil One!
I’ve got a digital video recorder that records everything I tell it to. I never told it to record the finale, though. I watch Red Green when convenient, but don’t go looking for it. I didn’t even know the series was ending until the next day.
Well…
I love Red Dwarf. I really, really do. I truly love that show.
But series 8 SUCKED in a HUGE way. Huuuuuuuuuge. I think it only had one good joke "I’ve found stuff in here that’ll make your hair stand on ends" "What is it, Hol?!" "Brill cream." But come on, bringing back the ENTIRE CREW? The whole point of the show was Lister is the last human left alive. Kris joining wasn’t TOO bad, considering Rimmer had left and he was almost human, but the entire crew? Also they seem to have spent all their money on Cutting Edge special effects, which were completely outdated by the time they aired.
I’m gonna end up buying the thing out of some misplaced sense of loyalty (and so I have the every episode). It would have been nice if they included the Smeg-Ups and Smeg-Outs or whatever those were called in this… I was hoping with every season that those would be included.
