Battlestar Galactica: Beyond The Red Line

Ogre writes, So I found some guys working on a game set in the new BSG universe using the Descent Freespace engine. The project is called Battlestar Galactica: Beyond The Red Line. Teaser trailers are available in WMV or DivX. There are also a more extensive Video and Photo galleries.

If the videos that they are showing are an accurate indicator of actual gameplay, this will be an incredible game. The thought of piloting a Viper online in co-op mode against a group of Cylon raiders has me all atingle.

Site’s blocked by my employer’s monitoring software, so I can’t just go look and have my questions answered. I don’t want to wait another 8 hours before I get home to find out, so would anyone mind giving me a hand here?

I’m curious to know if they’re using FS1 or FS2 as the engine (please say FS2). Are they modifying the physics to allow inertial flying? What time-period is this going to be set in? Will they be creating variants of the fighters for different duties, much like the FS games?

Based on the polish of the models and resolution, I’m going to guess FS2. The website doesn’t seem to say (in fact the site has very little save for trailers and the forum).

      Still looks sweet.

Its FS2 (it says at the beginning of one of the movies).

There is a useful FAQ here which provides more info. For those too lazy to click here are some cliffs notes (pulled from this and other sites):

A few years ago there was a game called Freespace2, a spinoff of the Descent series. It’s publisher, Interplay, bit the dust and after some crap a modernized version of the FS2 engine got open sourced. This was quickly gobbled up by various communities and several mods have sprung up based on it, including this game.
This game seems to be an unofficial community project dedicated to making a very cool BSG game, and it looks like they will succeed. It is being developed by volunteers in their spare time on a not-for-profit basis, so the resulting game will be free. A copy of FS2 will not be required to play it. To say that again,

This will be a Free Game.

It will be released for download ‘When It’s Done’ and not sooner. Devs avoid publicly announcing or even guesstimating a date to avoid disappointing anybody or cutting corners to make a deadline.

Official licensing status is unclear. Their forums have a casting call for voice actors stickied (so if you wanna be in the game you can send in an audition). Presumably this game will not include any voices from the series. One hopes that this game won’t be sued out of existance by current BSG rights-holders…

Physics won’t be completely newtonian, but will be a balance between real and game physics due to the FS2 engine.

Viper marks I II VII Raptors and more will be flyable.

The game will follow storylines from the existing series. Based on the movies and what I read, I’m taking that to mean that the game will cover battles we’ve already seen and won’t attempt to write too much new storyline (aside from the game’s own characters). I’d guess its likely that the game will create several minor characters and follow their progress.
