The volume of releases is up considerably this week,
with some quality rereleases and repackagings.
First, the genre releases:
- Alf:
Season
Three: If memory serves, this only ran three
seasons, anyway. - Buffy
the
Vampire Slayer: Season One: This is being
rereleased in cheaper,
slimline packaging, much as they have done with the
X-Files releases.
In this case, all seven seasons ship on the same
day. - Buffy
the
Vampire Slayer: Season Two: Slimline. - Buffy
the
Vampire Slayer: Season Three: Slimline. - Buffy
the
Vampire Slayer: Season Four: Slimline. - Buffy
the
Vampire Slayer: Season Five: Slimline. - Buffy
the
Vampire Slayer: Season Six: Slimline. - Buffy
the
Vampire Slayer: Season Seven: Slimline, and the
only season not
reviewed as a whole. (I really should get to
that.) - Dark
Shadows:
Volume 24: So many volumes, and this was a
relatively short soap
opera. - Drive-In
Double Feature: Creation of the Humanoids/War Between
the Planets:
I haven’t seen either, but I’m guessing they’re not so
good. - Frankenstein
Meets the Space Monster: The text of the Amazon
summary doesn’t
mention Frankenstein at all, just a Martian plot to
steal human women
because theirs were killed in an attack. - Legend
of the
Mystical Ninja: The Complete Collection: How many
anime fans are
reading this site? I have no idea which of these are
worthwhile and
which aren’t. - The
Lon
Chaney, Jr. Collection: I haven’t seen any of
these, but I like
the Chaneys. Well, I like the unarmed ones,
anyway. - The
Night
Stalker: The Complete Series: This is the new
Stuart Townsend
series, complete with the rest of the cliffhanger they
cancelled it
with. - The
Riddick
Trilogy: Two live action, one animated. - Superman:
The
Ultimate Max Fleischer Cartoon Collection: The
Fleischers nailed
the character. If you haven’t seen them already, pick
up a collection
of them. Based on the runtime, I’d say this includes
all 17 shorts.
(My copy is the Diamond Anniversary Edition, so I
can’t judge the
quality of this release.) - Superman
Classics: It’s a 17 cartoon collection, so I’m
betting it’s the
same public domain material released by a different
company. Take
your pick, knowing that this is a Vintage release, and
the above link
is VCI. I don’t have VCI release, but wasn’t
impressed by my other
Vintage products. My Image
Entertainment copy looks pretty darn good, and
it’s cheap. - The
Tomorrow
People, Vol. 3: British teenage superheroes. - The
Venture
Brothers: Season One: I haven’t seen it, but it’s
been recommended
to me.
Now, the non-genre releases:
- The
Bette
Davis Collection, Vol. 2: Includes Marked
Woman,
Jezebel, The Man Who Came To Dinner,
Old
Acquaintance, and the two disk special edition of
What Ever
Happened To Baby Jane? - Date
Movie:
Unrated Edition: I don’t even remember this coming
out. - Dave
Barry’s
Complete Guide to Guys: The Movie: I enjoyed the
book, but haven’t
seen the movie. I don’t know that it will adapt all
that well. - The
Doris Day
Show: Season Three: I don’t know how long this
series lasted. - Dukes
of
Hazzard: Season Six: Bo and Luke returned, but the
ratings didn’t. - Gentlemen
Prefers Blondes: My mother loves this movie almost
as much as her
embroidered “Blondes Also Prefer Gentlemen” throw
pillow. - Gideon’s
Daughter: I’ve heard wonderful things about this
one. - Hammer
Film
Noir Collector’s Set, Vol. 1-3: I’m a sucker for
film noir. - Joey
– The
Complete First Season: How many years can this one
last? - John
Wayne –
An American Icon Collection: Includes Seven
Sinners,
The Shepherd of the Hills,
Pittsburgh, The
Conqueror, and Jet Pilot. - Kids
in the
Hall: Season Four: Ah, Canadian Comedy. “I crush
your head.
Crush! Crush!” - Marilyn
Monroe: The 80th Anniversary Collection: It’s a
six DVD set, but
there’s no indication of which DVDs they are, though
I’d feel safe
guessing that the new Gentlemen Prefer
Blondes edition is one
of them. - Numb3rs:
The
Complete First Season: I only caught one episode,
but I quite
enjoyed it. - Platoon
(20th
Anniversary Edition): A new edition. - Queer
As Folk:
The Fifth (Final) Season: I’ve never watched this
one, either. - Rollergirls
–
Complete Season One: Somehow, my impression of the
box art and what
I know of A&E just don’t seem to mesh. - Smokey
and the
Bandit: Special Edition: Remember, you have to
have a moustache to
be the bandit.
Finally, the pick of the week. Although it’s a
rerelease of a product already available, I do really
enjoy the early seasons of Buffy the Vampire
Slayer.

Anime Fans?
We’re here (or at least I am). From what I’ve noticed over the last little while though, these ‘complete collection’ releases are coming out at different times up here in Canada versus down in the US. This particular one is Goemon, which some people apparently like – I’ve never gotten into him, however.
