“Superman Returns” Sooner

Superman Returns, originally slated for
release on Friday, June 30, has had its release date
pushed up to Wednesday, June 28. This is a very good
sign; moving a release to a Wednesday implies that the
studio is confident word of mouth will drive up
weekend ticket sales.

  1. Trailer
I normally avoid promos and trailers, but they showed the trailer for this guy in front of X3 (can’t TiVo in the theatre!) and man did it make me not want to see the movie.

I probably will, anyway, but I hope the trailer is non-representative.

Yeah I wasn’t impressed by it either.

I don’t understand it. Most of my friends are pretty down on the movie as well. I saw the previews and I got all cranked up for it. Perhaps it is because I am not a true Superman nutjob^h^h^h^h^h^hfanatic.

Superman nutjob^h^h^h^h^h^hfanatics… prepare to get your red kryptonian panties in a bunch ;)

Superman I and II were good movies… I dare say very good movies… and this Superman, if it continues in the same vein, as they are attempting to do, will be a good movie…

Making a "real Superman movie" that would make current comic Superman nutjob^h^h^h^h^h^hfanatics happy would not only be extremely difficult to accomplish in ~2 hours… it would not be watchable by anyone except Superman nutjob^h^h^h^h^h^hfanatics.

Hence… lay aside your red capes for 2 hours and go into the theater with the intent to watch a fun movie, not to pick it apart and compare it to whetever comic books you are drawing your love of Superman from. Comics are always being revised and reimagined and changed to make them fit our current reality and to provide dramatic possibilities. If a movie creates it’s own canon and style, but does a good job of it, why the heck not?

        Just deal…

Replace Superman with $YOUR_FAVOURITE_SUPERHERO and you’ve got a general description about comic book movies in general. They have to be interesting, have character development, good direction, good acting… and it’ll be a good movie. I’m a casual comic book fan, and as long as they stay somewhat true to the spirit of the comics while providing all of the above, I’m happy. I’m not going to nitpick over Spider-Man’s organic webshooters or the fact that Phoenix wasn’t possessed by an alien in the movies. Some things just don’t work in a movie. As Cyclops put it succinctly : "What would you prefer, yellow spandex?"

You know, I am SO glad I have finally seen someone say this thing. I could have almost written your post, it exactly mirrors my views on this. Personally? Im jacked, I think (based on current evidence) this new Superman movie will be good, or even great. Will know after I see it. From the previews I have nothing but positive feelings about it, and I was a Superman fan when I was a kid. Read the comics, collected the underoos, etc.

Wait a minute. Does that mean you collected other people’s Superman underoos?

Yea :/ Did I get yours? If so, sorry. I no longer have them.

I’m far from being a fanatic/nutjob. I just honestly thought the trailer made it look like a really bad movie.

Sorry, I was refering more to my friends. I know they are nut jobs because of the fact that they are my friends.

I was just talking my one friend today, and his whole reason for not liking it is because the actors look nothing like the characters… Sigh… I would rather have an oriental superman who could act then a complete likeness of superman who can not act at all. But that is just my own two cents.

  2. Suckage is a relative statistic
I can’t help but believe that this movie would be better received if there wasn’t already an excellent weekly series.

People have invested a lot of time watching the current incarnations of Clark and Lex evolve a complex relationship. What’s worse, they’re portrayed damned well (i.e. much better acting than I would have ever expected from a weekly "superhero" show). It’s going to be very hard for a two hour movie to make you believe the guys on the big screen are the real-deal, and not just stand-ins for the actors from Smallville.

So, unless the new movie is 110% beyond abso-freaking-fantastic, it’s probably going to leave most Superman fans unimpressed. I really think this was the wrong time to create another Superman movie; they should have waited until Smallville was off the air for five or six years.

    I’ll see it anyway. :)
