The number of DVD releases coming out each week
continues to increase. Some of them are even quite
good.
First, the genre releases:
- The
Arnold
Schwarzenegger Celebrity Pack: Includes
Predator,
Commando, and True Lies. - Charmed
– The
Complete Fifth Season: I recently picked up the
first season based
on the recommendations of a friend. We’ll see how
that turns out
before I decide if I’ll buy the other seven. - The
Colin
Farrell Celebrity Pack: This includes
Daredevil (in the
superior director’s cut release), Phone Booth
and
Tigerland. - Doctor
Who –
Genesis of the Daleks: This one interests me
somewhat. - Doctor
Who –
Revelation of the Daleks: This one doesn’t
interest me quite as
much. - Dumbo
(Big Top
Edition): Disney’s rerelease. - George
Clooney
Celebrity Pack: Includes One Fine Day,
the Soderbergh
version of Solaris, and The Thin Red
Line. - Godzilla
– The
Original Animated Series Vol. 1: The really old
cartoons. - Godzilla
– The
Original Animated Series Vol. 2: The rest of the
series. - He-Man
and the
Masters of the Universe, Season Two Volume One:
I’m afraid to get
this, in case it’s not nearly as good as I
remember. - Oh My
Goddess:
The Collector’s Edition: For the anime fans. - Star
Trek Fan
Collective – Q: Collecting Encounter at
Farpoint,
Hide and Q, Q Who, Deja Q,
Qpid,
True Q, Q-Less, Tapestry,
All Good
Things…, Death Wish, The Q and the
Grey and
Q2 from TNG, DS9, and Voyager. - The
Time
Tunnel: Season 1, Volume 2: Completing the first
season collection. - Underworld:
Evolution (Widescreen Special Edition): The sequel
to the “Romeo
and Juliet” story that has transformed into a
trilogy. - Wandaba
Style:
Complete Collection: For the anime fans. - Weird
Worlds
Collection: Some rare sci-fi stuff. - The
X-Files:
Season Seven: A thin-pack rerelease of the
second-worst season. - The
X-Files:
Season Eight: A thin-pack rerelease of a pretty
good season. - The
X-Files:
Season Nine: A thin-pack rerelease of the worst
season.
Now, the non-genre releases:
- 3
Godfathers: I’ve heard of this, but I haven’t seen
it. (I’m not
really a western fan.) - Air
America –
The Complete Series: I enjoyed the movie, but
never saw the series. - Angelina
Jolie
Celebrity Pack: Includes Mr. and Mrs.
Smith, Pushing
Tin, and Life or Something Like It. - The
Batjac
Suspense Collection: Includes Ring of
Fear, Track of
the Cat, Plunder of the Sun, Man in
the Vault. - Black
Hawk
Down (Extended Cut): I still haven’t seen the
original cut. All I
know is that it beat out Memento for the
editing Oscar, so I
really want to see how it did that. - Butch
Cassidy
and the Sundance Kid (2 Disk Collectors Edition):
Now this is a
western I can enjoy. - Cheyenne
– The
Complete First Season: More westerns. - Dazed
and
Confused – Criterion Collection: Criterion always
releases the
good movies, and they do an amazing job with
them. - Denzel
Washington Celebrity Pack: Includes Man on
Fire, The
Seige, and Courage Under Fire. - Drew
Barrymore
Celebrity Pack: Includes Never Been
Kissed, Ever
After, and Fever Pitch. - Entourage
–
The Complete Second Season: Also available in a
two-season pack of
the first two seasons. - F-Troop
– The
Complete First Season: Yet another western. - The
Fast and
the Furious Franchise Collection: The first two
movies. Lucas
Black deserves so much better than to star in the
third film in this
series. - Firewall:
This year’s Harrison Ford movie. - Fort
Apache: Another western. - Fried
Green
Tomatoes (Extended Anniversary Edition): Remind me
to never eat in
that restaurant. - Glory
Road: Disney’s true story about a basketball
team. - Home
Improvement – Season Four: Fill your grunting
quota. - House
of
Strangers: Part of the Fox Film Noir
collection. - I
Wake Up
Screaming: Also part of the Fox Film Noir
collection. - Jennifer
Aniston Celebrity Pack: Includes She’s the
One,
Picture Perfect, and The Object of my
Affection. - The
John Ford
Film Collection: Includes The Lost
Patrol, The
Informer, Mary of Scotland, Sergeant
Rutledge
and Cheyenne Autumn. - The
John Wayne
– John Ford Film Collection: Western
collaborations, including
The Searchers (Ultimate Edition),
Stagecoach (Two Disk
Special Editon), Fort Apache, The
Long Voyage
Home, The Wings of Eagles, She Wore
a Yellow
Ribbon, They Were Expendable, and 3
Godfathers. - The
Little
Tramp: Charlie Chaplin Collection: A five DVD
collection. - The
Long
Voyage Home: A western. - The
Lost
Boys: A BBC version of J.M. Barrie’s life. - The
Missing: Another strong Oscar performer. It
sounds somewhat like
The Searchers to me. - Mommie
Dearest
(Hollywood Royalty Edition): The Faye Dunaway
movie about Joan
Crawford. - Monty
Python
In The Beginning DVD Book Set: There don’t seem to
be a lot of
details on this set. - Mr.
and
Mrs. Smith: This is a new unrated 2 DVD
edition. - Natalie
Portman Celebrity Pack: Includes Anywhere But
Here,
Garden State, and Where The Heart
Is. - NCIS
–
Complete First Season: The JAG spinoff. - A Nos
Amours –
Criterion Collection: Another Criterion
release. - Ring
of
Fear: A Paramount film noir-ish movie. - The
Searchers
(Ultimate Edition): This was the western that was
used in my film
studies class. I wasn’t impressed, which is the main
reason I don’t
really give the genre a chance anymore. - She
Wore a
Yellow Ribbon: Another western. - Stagecoach:
The
westerns abound this week. - They
Were
Expendable: Ford and Wayne together again, but
this time it’s in a
war movie. - The
Wild, Wild
West – Complete First Season: The old series that
inspired the
more recent movie. - Wings
of
Eagles: More Ford/Wayne war stuff.
Finally, the pick of the week. The X-Files Season
Eight came
close, but I’ve got to go with the Criterion
Collection Dazed and
Confused release. If you’ve never tried a
Criterion Collection
release, you really should. I’ve never seen DVDs so
well authored.
No other DVD makes the layer change so completely
transparent. It’s
remarkable.
Woo!
I’m glad Time Tunnel volume 2 is finally coming out.
Dazed and Confused
What about the movie itself–is it any good?

Re: Dazed and Confused
It’s one of the classic teen movies, as well as a classic stoner movie. One of the reasons it’s a classic in both genres is that is has a lot of fans who aren’t teens or stoners. I’d be recommending it whether it was Criterion or not.
