Save the Serenity?
To be fair, the guy even mentions that the screenings are not for the purpose of ‘saving’ Serenity. They’re for a) raising money for charity and b) letting new and old fans alike see the movie on the big screen.

There is a bit of confusion, because a wholly unrelated group picked the same day and made it "Buy Serenity Day," encouraging everyone to go buy a second copy of the movie as a show of fan solidarity.
(Also, if anyone wants to meet the owner of an obscure SF discussion site, I’ll be at the one in Bloomington, Indiana. Yes, it’s a four hour drive, but it’s still the closest showing to me. Look for the guy wearing a Hawaiian shirt so loud even Wash wouldn’t wear it.)

I think I’ll just host my own screening and encourage the friends that come over to donate to the cause. If anyone will be in Corvallis, OR Friday, feel free to join in ;-)

Er… yeah, I’m going to NOT be doing that.
Fan solidarity is one thing, but getting two copies of a DVD to prove a point is just… silly?

Bloomington is only about 45 minutes North of me, but having a child and no regular babysitter means my wife and I probably can’t go. When Serenity came out originally, Bloomington was also the closest city with a theater showing it. We did manage to get to opening night for that at least.
Besides, if the weather holds out, we’ll probably be out of town that day anyhow. Perhaps once the little guy has grown up (He’s almost 2) and we’ve turned him into a proper Browncoat, they’ll do this again.
