SG1 ends, Atlantis continues

Sci-Fi Wire has the details here. The current, tenth season of Stargate SG1 will be the last, but Stargate Atlantis will continue for at least one more year. (NOTE: I posted this before checking the sub queue. Thanks to TwistyHat and Ogre for also bringing this to our attention.)

Gateworld has an article stating that Stargate SG1 will go on at least in some format or other. Perhaps they’ll jump networks again, or make TV movies. Curious to see where it’ll go from here.

Movies in some form would be great, because then they should be able to get RDA again! On the other hand, they would probably use the same writers who have made this and last season’s plots look like a piece of net, so…

Well, there was the line in the 200th episode that "the movie was back on" so perhaps we’ll see some big budget Sci-Fi movies (at least, big budget for the Sci-Fi network) with the SG-1 cast.

  2. Mini Series
A Mini Series a year, 6 – 8 hours, would be awesome. I would much rather see SG-1 go on than Atlantis. I really don’t care for the plot line in it too much.

  3. Fargate
I know the last couple of seasons have been rough for SG-1, but I thought the new "Fargate" was just starting to figure out its direction. After all, any new series (not written by JMS) takes a couple of seasons to do that, and this was, in most respects, a new series.

Even when it wasn’t good, it was still usually entertaining. Non-genre Psych might fill in the hole, but I really don’t know what I’ll do if my DVR isn’t loaded up with Stargates on Saturday morning. Let’s hope Atlantis gets some teeth.

As for the movie, I certainly thought that line in "200" was worth suspicion. Then again, with so much fanservice in that episode, it’s hard to take without skepticism. Miniseries would be great. Small, self-contained, "Fargate: The Ori Wars" mini-movies could keep the stories tight and worthwhile.

So, will we see resolution to the Ori incursion before the end of the season in June?

I wouldn’t be surprised to find the Ori show up in the Pegasus galaxy. After all, we have replicators now. They seem to be moving all the villains from SG1 over to Atlantis.

True. If the Ancients are in the Pegasus Galaxy, the Ori would have to go there to exterminate them. That would be horrible television. Of course, I always thought of the ascended plane as being universal, anyway (meaning, they’re everywhere at once).

The problem is that Pegasus has been "over-culled" by the Wraith. The Ori need followers to power themselves, so they need planets teeming with life. What I’m waiting for is for the Wraith to head for Earth and get their butts kicked by the Ori – the latter wouldn’t be too happy with a species that kills off most of their followers.

Good point. I’m wondering what sort of Deus ex Machina they’re going to pull out of their collective nether regions to deal with the Ori. Then again, I guess they’ve created enough plot devices over the past decade.

Maybe the Nox will actually get off their collective high horses and fight? That might be amusing.

  4. Way to go, SciFi.
Here we go again. I just hope they don’t pull a Farscape and end it with a cliffhanger again.

(Is Ben Browder going to be his own category on jumpthesahrk.com? I hope not!)

  5. My $.02
While this announcement makes me want to cry like the little girly-man I am, I would rather see SG-1 go out with the majority of it’s dignity in tact.

Personally, I would rather see various mini-series than a 2 hour feature film. A feature would make me fee like I’m spending $10 to watch a 2 part episode. The idea of a second spin off makes me both giddy and wary at the same time.

The one thing that I hope for most out of this is that the writers will now have more time to concentrate on Atlantis. While I admit that I like Atlantis, sometimes the stories are a little thin in the plot department.

Ideally, I’d like to see them get Atlantis up and running with a full head of steam for 2 or 3 seasons by itself, then launch another (well thought out, good story based) spin off by having a 4 part SG-1 mini series leading up to a 2 hour premier of Stargate: Baal’s.

I was actually expecting the Chinese to get their own Stargate team based on the eagerness of the Chinese representative in the Oversight Commitee. So why not a Chinese spin-off, produced in Hong Kong, with lots more two-handed gunplay than we are used to? :)

While it may have just been coincidence, DS9 really started kicking ass after TNG went off the air.

I know I’m going regret this, but I’ve always thought that DS9 finally found its mojo when the realized that the B5 model of story-arcs was a lot better than the episodic particle-of-the-week model.

Why regret such a statement? (See also, my JMS plug, above.) ;)

It’s odd, but I’ve read many comments from Trek devotees who think that DS9 went off the rails with the Dominion War. For me, that’s when I actually started watching every week instead of just catching the odd episode here and there. It’s also what prompted me to read the "8th season" books which continue the story very well (Avatar, Mission Gamma and Unity), and they even bring back Ro Laren for surly Bajoran fun.

That’s when I gave up on it.
As I was a Trekkie back then, I was loyally watching it, until I realised what a huge giantic enormous pile of crap DS9 was, and that it was Trek in name only.

I watched the beginning of the dominion war, I gave up when I realised that no, they weren’t going to make the link between the Tosk and those predator wannabes.

Remember Tosk? Reptile-like, artificial species, no need for food, turns invisible, created for a specific purpose, and pretty much exactly like those stupid jem hadars? No?
            *sigh*
            I do.

TNG was what immediately came to mind, but X-Files: Fight The Future also comes to mind.

yeah, thats basically what i’m thinking. season 4 of Atlantis could start a nice B5/DS9 style multi-season story arc.

  6. minority report
i know i’m probably in the minority here, but i’ve never been a fan of the stargate shows. the original theatrical movie was alright; i very much enjoyed the directors cut though. the tv series though is only so-so imho.

i think my problem is the writing is just too sci-fi lite. i enjoyed farscape a LOT, even though i missed many episodes and often had no idea what was going on (obviously the main problem with farscape) i loved every second of it. i just hope that the sg1 timeslot will be filled in with something more in the farscape caliber rather than sg1…

or they could make another silly guilty pleasure show like lexx. heheh

    • Re: minority report
ICalling SG1 "sci-fi lite" seems a little harsh. It may just be that you prefer your sci-fi with more spaceships and fewer P90s, and more "make-up" aliens than humans living on other planets. Of course, SG1 has steadily added more and more fictional science, to the point where the last three seasons or so have practically been a different show (though they still mostly eschew "weird" aliens).

If I was to create a "sci-fi lite" category, it would probably include every sci-fi show on television. "Hard" science fiction, to me anyway, would be more about the "sci" than the "fi" (Arthur C Clarke and Isaac Asimov come immediately to mind).

Not that I’m not telling you that you should like SG1 – to each their own and all that. I just don’t like the implication that SG1 is somehow "less" in terms of science fiction than other shows.

      • Re: minority report
The first time I tried to watch an episode of SG-1, it just didn’t engage my interest. Last time I tried, most of the episode was set on the bridge of a starship with teleporter technology and, IIRC, beam weapons. I’m guessing that thing wasn’t chambered for 5.7x28mm rounds. Oh, and I caught a time travel episode somewhere in between.

I’ll grant that, during the intervening years, SG-1 must have been something more than a plodding mess or a formulaic ripoff of the bad parts of pop scifi — otherwise, the respectably large and devoted fanbase would make no sense — but I don’t seem to have caught those episodes.

Given your described exposure, I can see where you would get a bad impression of SG1. Even I (an admittedly devoted fan) would admit that the last three seasons or so of the show have been weak – in fact, if I had my choice the show would have ended with the launch – and maybe the first, presumably successful, battle – of the Prometheus, Earth’s first large spacecraft.

That said, I think you owe it to yourself to watch the early episodes. I thought that seasons 1-4 were particularly good. That’s not to say that all the stories were entirely original (many of them go after the "homage factor"), but between the overall story arc and the one-off stories the writers managed to build a pretty cool reality around SGC (Stargate Command for those not in the know). Once past season 5, things go downhill a bit, but certainly the stuff originally aired on Showtime was very worthwhile.
