September opens with a fair number of interesting titles, some of which are rereleases, and some of which are new.
First, the genre releases:
- ALF: Season 4: I think this was the last season, but I’m not sure.
- Aliens
- The Bela Lugosi Box: 15 Frightful Films
- Blade Runner – The Director’s Cut: This is the first director’s cut, not the upcoming revised director’s cut. It’s an amazing film.
- Brazil – 3 Disk Criterion: This has been released before, as Criterion number 51.
- Brazil – Single Disk Criterion: I haven’t seen a single disk edition before.
- Buffy: Curse of the Hellmouth: Eight episodes of the 144 episode series.
- Complete Toxic Avenger: The complete series in one set.
- Witch Mountain Two Movie Collection: With Escape From… and Return To…
- Fantastic Four: Now in a single disk edition.
- The Flintstones – The Complete Sixth Season: The final series of the show.
- Fraggle Rock – Season Two: I’d rather have the second season of the Muppet show, but that’s taking longer to put together.
- Frankenstein Unbound: Directed by Roger Corman.
- Gojira – Godzilla Deluxe Collector’s Edition: Do you want it with Raymond Burr, or without?
- House of the Damned: The 1963 edition.
- Jim Henson Fantasy Film Collection: With Labyrinth, Mirrormask and Dark Crystal.
- The Legend of Frosty the Snowman: The third sequel. The first two weren’t any good.
- Lost: The Complete Second Season: This is being billed as the “extended experience,” containing unaired flashbacks.
- Red Dwarf – The Complete Collection: I’ve been holding off on the individual releases hoping for this exact package, and now that it’s here, I can’t find a way to budget for it. Damn!
- Supernatural – The Complete First Season: The PVR hard drive filled up while I was on vacation and I missed an episode of this. I never managed to catch up then.
- Young Frankenstein
Now, the non-genre releases:
- Amarcord (Criterion Collection): A rerelease of Criterion Collection film #4, directed by Federico Fellini.
- High Anxiety
- Hustle – Complete Season One
- Oz – Complete Sixth Season
- Seven Samurai – Criterion Collection: A release of criterion #2, which is also one of the best movies I’ve ever seen. It was remade for American audiences as “The Magnificent Seven.”
- Silent Movie: Where the only person to speak is the world’s most famous mime…
Finally, the pick of the week.
It’s a hard week to decide; there’s some great stuff here. I’ve got to go with Seven Samurai. Akira Kurosawa was a great director. I own nine of his films, and they’re some of the best in my collection. (At least 13 of his movies have had the Criterion treatment.) It’s definitely worth checking out. Take a look at Rashomon while you’re at it; you won’t be disappointed.
Pick of the Week
That’s a good pick, though Brazil is an excellent film.
Re: Pick of the Week
7 Samurai should be required viewing for humans…
Jim Henson languages rant
# ‘jim Henson Fantasy Film Collection
# Format: Box set, Closed-captioned, Color, NTSC
# Language: English
# Region: Region 1 encoding (US and Canada only)
There are TWO official languages for region 1.
This is a high-nostalgia release for which the french versions of the movies exist, I have seen them.
PUT THE DAMN LANGUAGE TRACKS ON THE GORRAM DVD, like everyone else does!

P.S. Adding spanish is less obligatory, but welcomed.
Good
I’ve been hoping for a standalone release of High Anxiety ever since the Mel Brooks boxed set came out. It’s really his only movie I still want on DVD and don’t have.
I love kurosawa, but frankly… Rashomon bored me a bit. Yes, it was groundbreaking in many, many ways at the time, but, you know. Seven Samurai, however, is amazing. I think Sanjuro is my favourite Samurai movie of his, though.
