lonelygirl15 is not a real teen… But will she be genre?

I’ve never followed YouTube or its most recent “star,” lonelygirl15, but it sounds as though determining she was a set-up with a creative team behind her did not require rocket science.

However, there may be a genre twist to this latest bit of online “teen” silliness.

lonelygirl15’s vlog has attracted ridiculous levels of attention, and since her exposure through the efforts of online “geeks,” speculation turns to the purpose of the phony teen vlogs. Is it an experimental online series? A Blair Witch-type promotional for a tv series or a movie?

And what kind of movie? Occult details figure in the background, a forthcoming unidentified religious ceremony grows in importance, and many speculate that “Bree’s” story will take a turn to supernatural horror.

Since we don’t have a “doofy net ephemera” category, I’m making this an “Ask the Bureau” and posing the following questions:

1. Does anyone here watch this thing?
2. Does anyone have a theory about the occult elements?
3. Does anyone here care, even remotely?

  1. For what it’s worth

Based on accounts I’ve read, I’ll speculate that they plan to set up some big event and then switch to a pay site, where viewers will be treated to some creepy horror twist.

Then they’ll begin production on the movie inspired by the shocking internet story, which idiots will assume was true.

  2. I guess I’m getting old
I don’t troll YouTube for stupid teenage angst videos. I troll it for psychotic real life people caught on tape like This Nutbag

      oookay, that was… odd.
On the other hand, the link right under that was an amateur belly dancer, so maybe I should start paying more attention to youtube ;-)

Wow. That was amazing.

I found that funny, but at the same time, I kind of feel sorry for that lady, who obviously needs serious psychiatric attention.

Yeah kinda sad, but at the same time I don’t think I’d have filmed it for 4 min, i’d have called someone in authority.

  3. Meh.
I think I sat through one of those movies because I thought she was kind of cute. But it swiftly got boring.

Spending any amount of time on Youtube’s "community" makes me feel dirty, as it seems to be exclusively made up of shrieking, mentally disabled twelve year olds.

  4. YouTube is too "cool"
I can’t be involved with anything truly cutting edge or "hip," so I don’t look at YouTube at all (except when I visit a particular site that does their own videos via YT). Thus, I probably won’t see this stuff and won’t visit YT for entertainment purposes for at least another year or two. Once it’s "old news," then I can check it out.

Although, it is rumored that there is a YouTube video of me in a teaser trailer from the last movie I did. So, I guess I’m already tangentially involved at that. ;)

So, you’re too cool to be cool? :D

Hehe. I don’t think so. No, I’m just usually last on board with what I think of as "social" phenomena. I take a long time to develop an interest in things like YouTube, MySpace and the like. It may stem from some self-loathing, which causes me to dislike other humans (and their interests) as well. That may be why I’m more into pursuits considered "geeky" like scifi, comic books, videogames and such. :)

Have I been living in a hole lately?

Oh what, I have been, its called the "Physics Major."

That would be more relevant than following webtrends.

The creators of the site have made some statements, for what they’re worth.

  5. I watched
I was curious so I went and watched about a third of the posts. Somewhat interesting, her cute factor helps a lot though, good to hear she is over 18. After hearing so much about it I thought there would be more too it though.
