Didn’t they already do a Sarah Jane and K9 spin-off before?

To be fair, I think they’re aiming the Sarah Jane vehicle squarely at the kids while Torchwood goes after the adults – Doctor Who, I suspect, they would like to be squarely in the middle. In fact, a Rose spinoff – which was already budgeted – was dropped by Russell T Davies (current "king" of Who) precisely because he felt like it was pushing things too much.

Think of it this way: We’re getting fewer episodes of Who per series than were done in the past, so these spinoffs can be considered as just filling in that space (not to mention the years entirely without The Doctor).

I’m just happy that I wasn’t lacking for TV during summer rerun season. Watching series 2 of Doctor Who and series 1 of Life on Mars filled the void nicely. :)
