A ‘Prestige’-ous Box Office

Now that we have some respectable genre films back in theaters, I’m resuming the Box Office report. I almost posted something for the week Jackass 2 was tops at the box office, but I preferred to spend the time openly weeping for the demise of intellect and good taste.

Not making the Top Ten, but a new genre release is the 3D rerelease of “Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas.” Considering I could only find it on 2 screens in my entire state (Colorado), I imagine few people even knew of its existence.

  1. The Prestige *
  2. The Departed
  3. Flags of Our Fathers *
  4. Open Season
  5. Flicka *
  6. The Grudge 2
  7. Man of the Year
  8. Marie Antoinette *
  9. Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning
  10. The Marine

More facts and figures from Box Office Mojo

  1. The Prestige
We *need* a Prestige thread as it definitely has scifi elements. Fantastic movie too btw. :)

  2. the nightmare before christmas
i loved this movie when i was younger, and thought that it had disappeared from the face of the planet. i almost had a heart attack when i saw the commercial for the re-release of the 3D version. except i cant find out where in ohio its playing someone help me!!

  3. the grudge 2
okay one more comment before i get back to work, was the grudge 2 as stupid as everyone said it would be? should i go see it?

    • Re: the grudge 2
I saw a preview screening. It’s terrible. Without giving too much away I’ll just say the movie had no point and I don’t think the writers or director knew where they were going.

  4. Genre?
I often wonder what people mean when they say "genre film". I mean, everything out there is part of a genre. Its just that most of it is part of the genre "suck". Especially Jackass, etc.

We at the Bureau (at least in our emails to each other) have taken to calling anything Sci-Fi/Fantasy as "Genre." True, everything is part of a genre, but not necessarily our genre. Maybe we need a better term? "Speculative Fiction" is the technical term for Sci-Fi/Fantasy, but it doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue.
