Smallville Discussion – “Static”

I mentioned last week that the review might be late this week. (I was at an uncle’s funeral yesterday.) I did manage to watch the episode, but realized when I sat down to write the review that I was still too distracted to review it fairly. Therefore, instead of a score, I’m just going to write some general comments, found below.

First of all, the “High Point” for me this week was making Jimmy and active and useful character. Until now, he’s been comic relief and window dressing, but this week he became a critical part of the story, performing functions that no other character could perform. As for the “Low Point,” I agree with Chloe: there was no reason for Clark to withhold the details from her. Still, it’s nice to know that there’s a definite direction forming with the Zoner plotline. What are your thoughts?

  1. Who’s the mystery hero?
I’ve heard rumor of two possibilities, spoiler tagger here-in just in case:
    Cyborg, or Martian Manhunter
I think more likely option 2, given the eyes, but that’s what I heard. I also heard we’re actually going to get the beginnings of the JLU in 3 episodes. Very interesting…

I’m guessing Martian Manhunter. I’ve never heard of him, but looked him up briefly online and it seems he has a thing for Oreos, and we saw a few Oreos in the episode.

  2. Bugged me
A few things bugged me. The first is Lana. I guess I’m just having a hard time adjusting to this Lana. I don’t really know where to start, but I don’t like it (but I will deal with it).

But there seemed to be a major goof up towards the end. When frequency guy was fighting with Lana, he dropped the knife which slid across the room, then while on the ground he and Lana phased into the other frequency where Lex was (Lana was touching the guy when he phased so she phased with him). But the knife was there in the other frequency too even though he wasn’t holding it. Did that not make sense to anyone else?

Although I think she’s being rather inconsistent, I think they’re working on the same slow, "slippery slope", transition to Evil as they’ve been doing with Lex. At least the show is consistent: the Luthor story continues to be a lot more interesting than the Kent story.

It had already been established that he was able to interact with two frequencies at once. He may be able to interact with objects he wants to interact with, and bring them into the frequency he is on.

  3. The end of Lana?
I think we’ll be seeing the end of th4e Lana character soon. It seems pretty obvious that she will, somehow, die because Clark had to go take care of some phantom zone dude and wasn’t available to save her. This, I think, is what finally causes Lex to snap and just quit trying to pretend he’s a good guy.

Am I nuts? It just seems too predictable though… Hasn’t anybody noticed this before or, has this been known for a while now (and I just didn’t hear about it)?

My wife and I are thinking along the same lines, except we think Lana will live but lose the baby, and that will push Lex over the edge. And somehow Clark will feel guilty.

Interesting… that would work as well, I guess but, I don’t think that it will happen that way because, AFAIK, Lex Luthor never had a wife. So, unless they decide to skip the wedding (remember, Lex popped the question) and decide to just live in sin, the baby must be born before they get married or she’ll die before either (wedding/birth) happens.

        Anyway, just my $0.02
