Babbster writes, In a press release on Monday, MGM officially announced the continuation of the Stargate SG-1 franchise after its 10th and final season concludes later this year. Two movies are included in this announcement, the first being “Stargate: The Ark of Truth” which will complete the storyline involving the Ori.

  1. Brainstorming the new movie plots…
"Ok, for the first movie let’s wrap up this stupid Ori storyline. Man I tell you, the show hasn’t been good since the Go’auld. The enemies have just sucked… replicators… Lucian alliance… Ori… boring. I wish we could just pretend none of it ever happened and keep using the Go’auld as the enemy. Hey! That’s it! We’ve got our second movie!"

  2. Let’s see…..
If they’re going to make two movies and spend $100 million on each, then I’ll take a wait and see attitude.

If they’re going to make two movies by stringing four episodes of the show together, then I say that’s bullshit and as a fan, thanks for screwing me.

  3. I’m Too Far Gone
Too far gone to get mad about potentially average SG1 movies. I’ve spent 10 years with the show and I just can’t get too critical of it anymore. Am I a particular fan of the Ori storyline? Not really, but I still watch and find myself enjoying the ride. Would I have preferred that RDA had stayed on the team? Absolutely, but Ben Browder is fun to watch, too. Do I think that the first four seasons are light years better than the latest four? Duh, but the spaceships have made for some cool moments.

In other words, I will consume whatever Stargate I’m offered. The show would have to go beyond bad for me to quit at this stage – mediocre could keep me on the hook for another 10 years. :)

Some insight, then, on the Trekker phenom…. ; )

Hehe. I suspect there’s some truth to that, but if they try to do a Stargate series set 200 years away from the current shows it had better be friggin’ awesome. :)

  4. SHARK !!!
Sounds like everyone is in agreement then.

The end of the system lords was when Stargate jumped the shark.

I hate to say it, but I knew the moment it happened. – all I could see in my mind was RDA in a leather jacket towed behind a speedboat giving the thumbs-up while flying through the air. (anybody under 35 years old, don’t bother… You won’t get this. Just read on. Or check out http://www.jumptheshark.com/ for more info.)

It’s odd, really. With as much great stuff as this team has done, and with as obvious as it was that the shark was being jumped… Why did they do it?

Oh, and one last thing… I don’t care how much clout you’ve build up over the years. Intentionally leaving a 10 year story unfinished just to sell a movie is a LAME move. Nobody is going to watch the final season of SG1 and then ONLY see the movie to get the end of the story. We WOULD have watched anyway. This just makes me feel less like an appriciated loyal fan and more like a pawn.

A couple of thoughts: First off, everyone knows all about "jumping the shark." It’s old news, and it’s tired to boot.

My other comment would be that SG-1 isn’t a "10 year story." In fact, if it was it would directly contradict your assertion that the destruction of the system lords was when the show went off the rails. To some degree, in fact, I would argue that the show changed significantly before that point because they gave it over more to bigger storylines instead of focusing on mainly one-off episodes where the team visited a new planet, made contact and had a "unique" encounter that usually didn’t directly involve the big villains.

For me, I don’t see this as a big deal. Yes, the movies will be released on DVD first (as I understand it), but they’re still supposedly going to end up on SciFi Channel. That being the case, nobody is going to lose out on the conclusion – it will be like a season-ending cliffhanger with perhaps a longer hiatus (Sopranos, anyone?). It’s certainly nothing a Stargate fan should take personally.
