Heroes Discussion – “Distractions”

I’ve finally found a station that carries this when I work out of town, so I managed to catch it last night. Now I just need to figure out if I should be proud or disturbed that I recognized the wrist from last week’s preview before the full reveal was made last night…

  1. Takei
Is that all we’re going to get of Mr. Sulu? He didn’t do anything but read from the stereotypical Japanese father handbook.

Did anyone else notice his license plate?

There has been some talk of having him return, but it’s not yet confirmed.

Yes, that was great. Had this been a review, it would have been the high point, partly because it was so subtle. (For those who missed it, his plates read NCC-1701.)

        I did miss that!!! ROTFLMAO
        How fun!!! :)

Agreed, a definite high point. I think the only other contenders are Eccleston punching Peter, and the reveal of Claire’s father (which I didn’t see coming because I was deliberately trying not to look).

They’re really working in this "convergence" element, most recently with the Deveaux roof and Claire’s father (and uncle). I think Linderman will become an even bigger piece of the connection now that he owns Niki. I hope all this build-up amounts to something.

It’s interesting, when Peter realized how to control his power, he overloaded with Matt and Isaac (et al.). I can’t see him making a conscience decision to invoke those two. You’d think Nathan would be foremost in his mind, but he didn’t hover or fly. If he really is storing these powers (which partially excuses the healing after Claire left him in "Homecoming"), the Matt and Isaac overload suggests there’s more to summoning them than a conscience invocation.

My VCR turned off right about where the commercials stopped the teaser of Claire’s father. As you can imagine, I cursed… a lot.

          So who is daddy?

            So who is daddy?

"Heroes" is rerun on SciFi on Fridays (and somewhere else before that) so you can catch it there, but if you want to know now: Peter’s brother, I totally forgot his NATHAN! That’s it, right?

        • Re: Takei

He realized how to access them maybe, but control? The lack of control is why he overloaded. The resolution of which was my high point ;-)

I didn’t pick up on the owner of the wrist at the end of the previous episode, though I should have, and that is going to be a spoiler for a friend of mine who almost certainly will pick it up when he watches it…

Glad I’m not the only one to have noticed that. Of course neither my wife nor sister understood the reference.

  2. Shrink lady?
So, was the shrink lady dead then? How could Niki / Jessica have gotten out of prison? She’d just committed another murder! Or did I miss something?

    • Re: Shrink lady?

So, was the shrink lady dead then?

I think she moved right before they took N/J to her room.

How could Niki / Jessica have gotten out of prison? She’d just committed another murder! Or did I miss something?

You missed Linderman’s henchman and deep pockets. I’m guessing Linderman wants Jessica on his team (she’s killed four of his men), and so has bought her by paying someone else to plead guilty and some judge to listen. Plus, without psychiatric help, Niki seems to be losing to Jessica.

I thought she was just twitching…. death throws or something..

The twitching was likely supposed to be residual from being hit repeatedly with the stun gun, which shouldn’t be lethal even with many hits.

          • Re: Shrink lady?

            …the stun gun, which shouldn’t be lethal…

It is rare, but stun guns are potentially lethal (making their abuse that much more heinous. But I don’t think it was lethal in this instance.

  3. Super powers run in families…?
If Takei is to return to the role, is he going to be harboring his own secret? Is shame about his own power a driving force behind his active discouragement of Hiro?

I was wondering the same thing, but you can’t just play the "Heroes have Hero parents" card. It makes sense that Hero parents would have Hero children, but the reverse does not have to be true. Evolution only works one way.

His "super power" has already been revealed: He’s super-rich. Seriously, the easiest way to bring him back would be to tie him in somehow with Linderman. Given that Linderman seems to know things (his interest in the paintings, his possession of the sword, etc.), it seems likely that he would find out all about Hiro and his family and seek to use that in some fashion.

There seem to be many layers being slowly peeled away as the series go on and Linderman seems a likely candidate for the center.

This was posted on E! (In Kristin’s Blog) so it’s quite spoilery:

George Takei, who is smarter than all the rest of us combined (except maybe his onscreen son, Masi Oka, with whom he’s been known to converse in—wait for it—Spanish) told reporters in a conference call late last week, "As an actor, I know just as much as what the script shares with me, so I’m curious what genetic thing I may have passed on to my son, Hiro. In life there are consequences, and sometimes those consequences are passed on." (Somewhere in Texas, Micah and Claire are nodding in agreement.) George Takei’s Haito Nakamura appears tonight, then skips an ep, and then returns in the episode after next. When he returns, according to George, "We discover that I’m more entwined in the intrigue than I’ve initially thought." (Mmmm…Haito + Linderman = global superpower conspiracy?! Just a guess!)

Things could get interesting in that regard…

Well at the very least having vast wealth would allow Hiro have some Batman like resources to fund his crime-fighting.

That would be cool, but it would also probably be way too easy for this show. Look at how few of the norms – even relatives – are being supportive of the heroes. Interestingly, the only "powerful" norm who seems to be providing real encouragment to the heroes is HRG.

On the subject of our favorite "man in black," if I was doing a review my high point (or at least one of them) would have been the aborted attempt by his wife to say his first name. I laughed out loud at that, despite knowing that at the very least an attempted murder was coming up.

        • Re: Super powers run in families…?

OK, for the last two weeks, I’ve been trying to figure out what the heck "HRG" stands for. It was obviously meant for Mr. Bennet, but nobody on this site, as far as I have seen, has explained what "HRG" is abbreviating. The acronym just showed up mysteriously for the first time in the post for this ep with nary an explanation to be found. I finally decided to try and find out what was going on, and located an answer here, amongst other places. If I’m the only one who has been cluelessly stumbling over this acronym, call me stupid, but maybe somebody else out there can benefit from my ignorance.

          • Re: Super powers run in families…?
I prefer the nickname that was being used on Television Without Pity before the HRG one popped up – Bad Glasses Man. :)

Mr. Bennet, if that is his real name, wears horn rimmed glasses.

          • Re: Super powers run in families…?
Hehe. I had the exact same problem for a couple weeks and I felt so dumb when I actually looked for and found the answer that I decided not to tell anyone else. ;)

I thought it was Hero Recruiting Guy, though I couldn’t understand why anyone would refer to him as that and I didn’t want to ask as everyone else seemed to get it immediately.

Horn Rimmed Glasses is kind of anticlimactic.

          • Re: Super powers run in families…?

"Horn Rimmed Glasses", named for his distinctive eyewear.

Freeze-framing, in the scene where we see his driver’s licence, no first name is given, just "Bennet". I think we have a running gag.

I guess it depends on your definition of "powerful". I would say Mohinder is a big help with his knowledge of what is going on. Even HRGM has sought him out.

He’s potentially a big help. So far, he hasn’t actually done jack for any of the heroes. Recall how he treated Peter when they went looking for Isaac. Even in their most recent encounter he had nothing tangible to offer Peter when he and Nathan came a’callin’.

I rewound the episode and did a freeze frame on his License. Since when does a License not have a first name on it?!

Impressive catch. Though, even with a first name, how do we know it or Bennet are his real ones?

  4. Smallville – Crimson
Can someone tell me the name of the song that’s playing in the back during the talon scene of the last Smallville Episode – Crimson? It begins just as the show starts, just was the cupid appears.
    PLEASE HELP ME. THANX
