The Dresden Files: ‘Hair of the Dog’

After a series of ritualistic murders, someone mentions the word “werewolf” so Harry, of course, gets dragged in. Thing is, it looks like the lycanthropes aren’t the killers, they’re the victims.

  1. Solid Ep,.
    A nice solid Episode, IMHO.

    – Neat twist on the warewolf hunting co-ed’s theme that looked to be the obvious direction in the first few minutes.
    – A better than average mis-direction/twist in the action sequence at the end. Not stellar, not a REAL supprise, but better than the usuall hollywood telegraphed, formula sequences.
    – Intro of a possibly reoccuring character who we can feel for.
    – self-contained enough to be handled in a single ep, while still leaving room for future expansion (see above)

Of course, I was dissappointed that they totally glossed over the fact that he broke out of jail, and had no consequences from that what so ever

All in all, not a bad production for early in the first season.

I had the same disappointment, and further, while *we* we shown who the real culprits were, it wasn’t clear that the *police* would be convinced. I mean, he’s already framed for the silver powder, and then yet another murder by silver spike, in his office no less? Having her go off the deep end helps, but… I did love the way they demonstrated how close Bob has to be to the skull though. The show is growing on me, and the last thing I need is Yet Another Good TV Show to watch…oh well…

Ah, but did they know that he broke out of jail? Keep in mind that the first time it was found out was by the rogue FBI werewolf. Since they apparently marked her as a looney and murderer, they might just think that she kidnapped Harry from jail and tried to kill him. That would certainly be part of the lie I would tell in his place.

Anyhoo, I thought the episode was great. I like the pacing of the episodes so far (just different enough from other shows that it makes things feel "fresh") and I like the "understated magic" which [obviously] is reminiscent of John Constantine. If I can’t have an ongoing Hellblazer TV series (looking forward to Preacher, though!), then this is a very nice substitute. In that vein, the only real complaint I have so far is that I’d like to see a bit more "edge" in Harry Dresden’s character. So far, he’s been too nice to completely satisfy my taste in this genre.

I’m getting the feeling that maybe that’s what Bob’s for. A sort of anti-Giminey Cricket who’s in league with dark forces. Concerned for Hary, yes; but that notwithstanding, running on a discretely diferent agenda.

Now, I’ve never seen the books, so if that’s not his role there, then it’s just one change they made. But as somebody coming in with ZERO preconceptions, that’s what it looks like.

  2. Voice
My biggest issue with this show is that Dresden sounds like GOB from Arrested Development. And the magic doesn’t help!

  3. Getting Better
Enjoyed the show. Hopefully this show gets a big enough audience.

Still having issues with major items missing from the books (Blue Beetle, leather coat, etc) but the "feel" of the series is right. I predict Murphy will have a hard time with her character. She just doesn’t seem tough enough.

One scene I didn’t particularly care for was the cut scene between the FBI chick attacking the girl in the car and her waking up in the hotel. Just felt bogus. The FBI chick was tearing into her throat at the end of the car scene. The FBI dude and the chick had scratches, not bites.

Yes it is getting better, and hopefully it continues to do so. There has been some poor writing here and there, but as long as the improvement continues it should turn into a solid show.

As for things missing from the novels, I’m just forcing myself to treat the series as a completely independent entity, as they’ve removed 90% of Harry’s trademark gear from the books without IMHO a decent reason to do so. I’m still amazed that McConnolly’s doesn’t appear until season 2…
