Per-episode budget?
Don’t know if there’s an answer for this to be found, but do shows like BSG get a per-episode budget, or a per-season budget? If it’s per-season, I just might wet my pants with the effects they can come up with per episode, given what we’ve seen them do.

Unfortunately, I doubt this is the way TV executives think. Thirteen episodes likely means cheaper than twenty-plus episodes. At the very least, the writing should feel tighter.

What about the cast?
Since most actors are paid per episode I would think the shorter season will be cutting into their salaries quite a bit.
There’s also the residual checks when a series goes into reruns, which doesn’t normally happen if a series has less than 100 episodes.
So sure, the writers may be happy, but are the actors getting screwed?

I’m sure a few would think so, but some are likely in BSG more for the exposure and to get more work elsewhere, while others are probably not all about the money at this stage, having made a fair amount previously.
As far as residuals, while it’s true that 100 episodes is considered the syndication "sweet spot" resulting in the bigger deals, it’s not required anymore. With all the channels available, there are many more hours to fill up and even short-run shows are getting airtime. How many times, for example, has Firefly been repeated? It’s been on almost constantly since a short time after the show ended, and you can bet the actors are collecting some decent checks on that basis.

good news?
What’s so good about it? It’s a mediocre at best. Stargate SG1, Farscape and Lexx are far better series. The human cylons are the most interesting thing about it aside from the fact that they are religious nuts. The whole obsession that Ron Moore and the writers seems to have with smoking on spaceships is just stupid. Yes, the original had Starbuck smoking but you didn’t see everyone else lighting up. When I saw the humvee on Caprica I was thinking WTF? I’d rather see them scratch that series and startup something good like a continuation of Firefly, or how about a remake of Blake’s 7 done by Joss Whedon.

To the OP: I kinda agree, BSG isn’t great – it’s turned into even more of a soap opera lately with all this Apollo/Starbuck crap (although to be fair fewer filler eps might help a bit). I’m not even sure why I’m still watching it. I now dislike nearly every character in the show and am fervently hoping the Cylons win. But I am still watching it.. so it can’t be all bad I suppose..
