Amanda Tapping moves to Atlantis

Ogre writes, Just saw an article over on SCI FI Wire announcing that Amanda Tapping will be making the move from SG-1 to Atlantis:

“Tapping will appear in 14 of Atlantis’s 20 episodes. The new season will introduce a powerful new race, new cast members and mark the loss of beloved friends.”

Somewhat ominous and cryptic. I wonder if this is early confirmation to the rumors I’ve seen circulating that the Wraith will be phased out as the token bad guys? And hopefully the “beloved friends” indicates the demise of Rainbow Sun Francks and that abortion of a sub-plot.

  1. Who’s Going?
Supposedly, Elizabeth Weir is going to appear less and less, and I wouldn’t be surprised if she’s the one they’re planning to kill off.

As for the Ford subplot, they haven’t even touched that in nearly 2 years (according to IMDB he’s appeared in less than half the episodes so far – Ronon’s appeared in more episodes than Ford did before he got on that yummy wraith juice), so it would be a bit anticlimactic to kill him off at this point. I’m surprised anyone would even care enough to talk about it anymore.

I like Carter and, obviously, she’s nerdbait with her beauty and brains, so I’m glad she’s going to continue in the role on a regular basis. I just hope that with her comes a good direction for the show. Like many, I’m not that interested in the Wraith, and I’d like to see something at least a little fresher than space vampires.

  2. I wonder how that’s going to work out…
Given the presence of McKay and Zelenka, Carter’s skill set isn’t exactly required on Atlantis so I guess one or both of the existing residents is destined for the chop. Unless she’s going over there to run the place instead of Weir, but that is kind of a waste of her scientific talents. Plus, unless I’m mistaken or there are going to be more promotions, Carter would also become the senior military officer on Atlantis with the move which could cause some possible issues with Sheppard’s position as well.

If SG1 is disbanded post S10 and the movies (as seems likely given the move by Tapping) then Daniel Jackson would have been a more logical addition to the SG:A team. He’s been hankering to get to Atlantis for a while as the #1 Ancient expert so the move wouldn’t require any dramatic shakeup of the show, but whether that happens is largely up to Michael Shanks I guess.

Don’t confuse characters with actors. Jackson might make a better move, but Shanks has already left the show once. Meaning no disrespect, he’s probably glad to be done with it. The writers might have made it clear they needed a Worf for their DS9, and Tapping may have been the most willing. Let’s just hope they have enough sense not to have the Defiant conveniently defending Earth when it’s time for another movie. ;)

  3. Oh Goodie!
I can’t wait to see what unfolds between McKay and Carter. I think those two were meant for each other. Over the years there has been a lot of emotional growth for both characters. McKay has significantly mellowed over the years and Carter has gotten over her infatuation with O’Neill. After a rough start I predict romance will be in the air.

They are introducing a new race? What is going to happen to the Wraith and the Replicators? Deus Ex Machina?

  4. Ah man…
When I read about "loss of beloved friends" I didn’t expect it so soon – last nights Atlantis (in the UK) was really unexpected. One of my favorite characters.

  5. Show me the money?
Funny, I thought one of the main reasons for cancelling SG-1 was that the veteran actors’ salaries were getting too high? Amanda Tapping is certainly one of those. Maybe she was willing to take a pay cut?
