Heroes Discussion – “Parasite”

A few interesting turns came up last night, in the last new episode until April 23. I liked the way things converged, the way the commercials didn’t reveal what they seemed to reveal, and the names of agents Quesado and Alonso, who I am certain were named after Marvel editor Axel Alonso and Marvel editor-in-chief Joe Quesada. One thing I didn’t care for was having what would have been a great surprise casting choice spoiled by listing the name in the opening credits instead of the closing credit.

Ditto that. I saw the name, and immediately thought, "That’s an interesting choice for Linderman."

After last night’s episode, I’m convinced someone must have the job of shining lights directly into the actors’ eyes. Nathan always has a twinkle, as did Simone. Its also noticeable with HRGM.

I’m glad the sword worked for Hiro (and Ando), even if it was possibly a placebo. The connection between Mrs. Petrelli and The Haitian was a nice surprise. If she knows him, and Mr. Petrelli worked with Linderman, who almost certainly has some connection with it, then she probably knows a great deal about The Company.

Something I should’ve noticed last week and didn’t: HRGM and Mr. Nakamura met on Deveaux’s building roof, implying a possible connection between Deveaux and The Company. Also, as a side note to last week’s spoiler-that-wasn’t: the Petersen Specials had one who could resurrect.

I really enjoyed the interaction between the Bennetts, and was actually fooled by Willmer, even though I knew it had to be her as Simone. It was a cruel twist on a character trying to redeem himself.

And, finally, poor, foolish Mohinder. As he administered the IV, I thought, "It wouldn’t take much TK to pinch off the flow." Sylar is such a great villain!

I keep wondering when they will smarten up and just shoot Sylar (repeatedly) in the head when they have the chance. Then burn the body, and throw the ashes in 3 rivers for good measure.

How about poisoned, stabbed, shot, hung, stretched, disemboweled, drawn and quartered.
Oh… wait that didn’t work out so well.

Peter and Mohinder hooking up – I don’t think either of them will end up dead – is going to be interesting moving forward. Possible that perhaps Mohinder’s dad was wrong about who is "Patient Zero"? I just keep getting the feeling that it’s all about Peter; he’s going to be the key to everything and everyone eventually.

I disagree. We’ve seen that Sylar *is* Chandra’s first study, and Mohinder was able to unlock something using Sylar’s DNA. And even though Peter’s ability is to copy other abilities, the fundamentals of it may be no different than anyone else.

Correction and apologies: Shanti and Sanjong predate Sylar, and though I have the impression, I don’t recall for sure if Sylar was Chandra’s first study in NY.

Uh… who are Shanti and Sanjong?
            What did I miss?

            • Re: twinkle
Shanti is Chandra’s daughter and Mohinder’s sister. Sanjong is the Indian boy that entered Mohinder’s dreams.

We’ve also know that there were mutations at least 16 years before Mohinder’s dad was on the case.

I had one of those Doh! moments when the door opened. The Haitian had told HRG "I work for Claire’s family", but couldn’t figure out who he meant, when it’s so obvious…

The previews really pissed me off though: because of them, you’re not surprised when "Simone" shows up, even if you’re not sure what’s real. They’re just deliberately jerking the audience around. Worse, they had the key frames that are the spoiler as the last few frames at the end of a commercial break *inside the show*, so even skipping the commercials with the Tivo, you can’t avoid seeing it (or in my case, showing it to friends when they come to see it in a couple days).

I was taken in along with HRG in the hotel room though…

As for Sylar, I’m going more into the camp that both Sylar and Peter have to die: they’re just too powerful for good storytelling. Especially with what I think next season’s story line is going to be: Attack on The Company.

  2. OT – Spiderman 3 Trailer Online?
Has anyone managed to get the S3 trailer from nbc.com? Even the "small" one is huge and my download never manages to complete. If they cut this off tonight before I see it, I’m going to be upset.

Actual on topic post when I have more time…

So now we know how Peter gets his scar… I figured Hiro would nick him with his brand spanking new McGuffin sword.

  4. The scar
We now know where Peter gets his scar. I knew it had to be visible, but it seems the healing powers aren’t always perfect as Claire shows no scars.

It will be interesting to see if Sylar can continue taking powers and how he will eventually be stopped. My hope is that one of these mutations is an anti-power and Sylar loses it all.

What a great idea! It would be like putting Leech on an infinite feedback loop. I like it.

Peter seems to tap his stored powers on an instinctive level, ie when Claude threw him off the roof. Why didn’t something kick in when Sylar attacked him?

… Why didn’t something kick in when Sylar attacked him?

Something will. But if it happened immediatly, it would have spoiled the suspense for the cliff-hanger.

-Kinda bugged me that his powers clicked on and saved him instantly before, but now they just kinda froze for dramatic affect.

Absorbing Sylar’s new powers caught him off guard?

The hearing thing is apparently a bitch to get used to…

You have NO idea. I have a condition called hyperacusis, basically really sensative hearing. Beleive me, it sucks.

  5. Guest Stars

a great surprise casting choice spoiled by listing the name in the opening credits

If I remember right there are certain contractual issues if the guest star has a big enough role. They have to put the name in the opening credits.

I remember complaints with Buffy/Angel when reoccurring character appearances would be spoiled in the opening. Best not to read the credits until after watching the episode, if you can.

The SGA has recommendations, but they can change them if the story merits. A prime example was "S.R. 819" from "The X-Files," in which Krycek’s presence was meant to be a surprise. Instead of listing Nick Lea in the opening credits, they negotiated for a "Special Guest Star" credit for him in the closing credits right where the "To Be Continued…" goes. This kept his presence a surprise to those of us who sight read fast enough to read the credits without actually trying to. (Optional film studies trained me to watch the entire screen. Software used by our students at work trained me to read at 760 WPM. I read credits whether I want to or not.)

Actually, I think I recall exceptions for Buffy, when Giles or Angel would make surprise visits in the last few minutes of the ep.

Yeah, if i was on that show i would display the credits in the smallest font i could find, in white on a white background.

Masi Oka really earned his wages not to burst out laughing when he uttered this line!
