We got this column up, but between my work travel, Eldhrin’s Ph.D. thesis deadlines, Timeshredder’s con appearance, and various other factors, we didn’t manage to get a movie review up yesterday. We’ll see if we can manage one today, but we can’t guarantee it.
First, the DVD releases:
- 10 Items or Less
- .45: An older Milla Jovovich action flick.
- 48 Hours / Another 48 Hours
- Columbo – Mystery Movie Collection, 1989: After the regular series ended, people like me wanted more, so a series of made for TV movies came out. Now they’re being collected.
- Deja Vu
- The Documentaries of Louis Malle – Eclipse Series 2: The Eclipse series is an imprint of the Criterion Collection.
- Dogfights – The Complete Season One
- Drew Carey Show – The Complete First Season: The only thing this series had in common with Seinfeld was that the best parts of the show revolve around cast members the show wasn’t named after.
- Ed, Edd ‘n’ Eddy – The Complete Second Season
- Essential Classics – American Musicals: Includes “The Music Man” (which is excellent), “Meet Me In St. Louis,” and “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.” Could be good for Mother’s Day shopping, but I’d really only recommend the first one.
- Essential Classics – Dramas: Includes “The Maltese Falcon,” “Citizen Kane” and “Ben-Hur.” This I’d recommend to anyone.
- Essential Classics – Family Films: Includes “The Wizard of Oz,” “The Goonies,” and “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.”
- Essential Classics – Musicals: Includes “My Fair Lady” (which is decent), “Singin’ In The Rain” (which is great) and “Gigi” (which I haven’t actually seen.)
- Essential Classics – Romances: This includes “Gone With The Wind,” “Casablanca” (which is a great one), and “Doctor Zhivago.”
- Flipper – The Original Series, Season One
- Forgotten Noir Collector’s Set 2: Includes “Man From Cairo,” “FBI Girl,” “Mask of the Dragon,” “I’ll Get You,” “Fingerprints Don’t Lie” and “Tough Assignment.”
- Harry and the Hendersons (Special Edition): I enjoyed this so much as a child, I’m almost afraid to watch it now, just in case it doesn’t hold up.
- Ironside – The Complete First Season
- James Cagney – The Signature Collection: Warner Bros. does a great job with these sets. This one includes “The Bride Came C.O.D.,” “Captains of the Clouds,” “The Fighting 69th,” “Torrid Zone” and “The West Point Story.”
- Jean Renoir Collection: A 3 disc collector’s edition.
- The John Cleese Comedy Collection: Includes “How To Irritate People,” “Romance With A Double Bass” and “The Strange Case of the End of Civilization.”
- My Lucky Stars: With Jackie Chan.
- Naruto, Vol. 11
- NCIS – The Complete Third Season
- Night at the Museum
- The Odd Couple – The First Season
- One Day at a Time – The Complete First Season
- Planet Earth
- The Queen
- Shameless – The Complete First Season
- Teri Hatcher Collector’s Set: Includes “All Tied Up” and “A Touch of Fate.”
- Thr3e
- Trinity Blood – Chapter VI (Limited Edition)
- VCI Short Films Contest Winners
- Wayne’s World / Wayne’s World 2
- Willow – Special Edition
- WKRP in Cincinnati – The Complete First Season: Given the choice between replacing the music and not releasing the series at all, they replaced the music. Personally, I’m happy with that.
Now, the Blu-Ray releases:
- Deja Vu
- Failure To Launch: I saw this when I was outvoted once. Two of the secondary characters (his father, her roommate) are entertaining, but they’re not enough to carry the movie, and not enough to make me watch it twice. Your mileage may vary.
- Night at the Museum
- Planet Earth
- The Queen
- Secret Window
Here are the HD DVD releases:
- Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind: I say more in this review than I can in one sentence here.
- Failure To Launch: See comments in the Blu-Ray section.
- The Nutty Professor: The Eddie Murphy remake.
- Planet Earth
Finally, the pick of the week. I really can’t decide between the Columbo and WKRP sets. I preordered both months ago, and can’t wait for either to show up.
Harry…
I remember pestering my parents into taking my brother and I to see this when it came out, and I enjoyed it. Then again I was 12.
Re: Harry…
My brother and I wore out a VHS tape of it. All I remember is the closing scene with the perfectly camouflaged family of Sasquatch.
Plus, John Lithgow is usually fun to watch.
