The BBC have the news that Kylie Minogue will be starring in Voyage of the Damned, this year’s Christmas special of Doctor Who.
Is a celebrity guest star going to be a new tradition for Doctor Who Christmas specials? Why do they even have a Christmas special in the first place?
Why?
Because Doctor Who is a show aimed at family viewing, that’s why. Adults on the couch, children hiding behind. Xmas is a good time for them to watch something together.
Re: Why?
So they could watch something else. Or even talk.
Re: Why?
Have you met the British?
What’s your problem, anyway? They’re the BBC – they produce television, not encourage people to turn off their TVs. It’s something fun for British families to do together, and it’s more Who for us.
Re: Why?
I am British. We talk. Sometimes. About the weather.
Sure the BBC produce television, I’d just much rather see them add an extra episode to the series than have a gimmicky Christmas episode starring a token celebrity (sorry Kylie, but you are this time) and probable recycling of those Father Christmas robots again.
Re: Why?
I can see that point of view, but I don’t think those are the choices thanks to business constraints. I think the normal business of the BBC is to budget for a maximum of 13 episodes (which we are getting in the normal series). I perceive the Xmas episode as extra, funded from a different pot of money.
Re: Why?
Constant attacks on the internet.
Re: Why?
You might get fewer of those if you stop going to forums for fans of a show and suggesting that people would be better off watching something else or talking.
Re: Why?
Not to mention, it staves off withdraw waiting for next season to start.
So come on, come on do..
.. the locomotion with the Dr?

Doctor Who is only 13 episodes long anyway. Don’t go complaining about wanting less of the Doctor :-). Less RTD written episodes, sure, less Doctor, no.
Re: More
Unfortunately, RTD has written the script for this one, and it’s bound to be like last year’s – a bridge between companions, what with Martha taking a break for the first half of series four.
Re: More
I’d say its only 12 episodes, they can’t be bothered to stay and do 13 (but take the money), so we get the ‘doctor light’ episode each season where he phones in.
Re: More
Which episode are you talking about? The Xmas special would be the 14th.
Re: More
Ohhh…. you’re talking of a Bottle Show http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bottle_show where the actors and production staff just make up the numbers so there is enough content to filful the contract but doesn’t necessaryly advance the oerall arch of the series. Shame that, isn’t it.
