A summer movie other than Harry Potter and Transformers.

joe__gee writes, I just found Sunshine, from Fox Searchlight Pictures. It’s something other than a release from a major company, and it has the look of a blockbuster. Searchlight usually releases the heavy intellectual art films. This could be closer to “2001” or “Solaris” than, say, “2010” or “Armageddon.”

  1. Looks interesting…
…reigniting the sun seems a little handwavy, but what’s irritating me now is that it was released over here in April and I missed it.

  2. Good idea, oh Lord!
    Oh man.

Now I want to see the movie, Harry Potter and the Transformers.

PS: With a Lou Reed soundtrack.

      LOL

It sounds like it’s either a music group or some studio market exec’s wet dream. :)

  3. 2001?…probably not
I missed Sunshine on its UK release, but based on the reviews I’ve read I’d say check it out…but don’t expect a ‘heavy intellectual art film’ ;)

It has a great look, and from reading about it on the Searchlight web site it looked to be a bit more substantial than some of the usual summer dreck. Some of the reviews seem to suggest it derails in the final third of the movie, but I’ll forget about what I have read if I can just find this thing showing anywhere within seventy-five miles of me.

P.S. By the way, in the US most British-made films (other than Harry Potter) automatically have either an art-film or intellectual aura based on how Americans hear an English accent. Because for the longest time the only place where people heard an English accent was on PBS, the Public Broadcasting System network (an over the air cultural network partially funded by taxpayer money) at least in the Midwest people associate an English accent, *any* English accent, with high culture. I knew someone from central England who came over here. He did quite well for himself just because people liked to hear him speak. :)

That’s America, style wins over substance every time. *sigh*
