Blade Runner, the Final Cut

chad writes, The final cut of Blade Runner will be released later this Winter. Director Ridley Scott says this cut will show the movie as he originally wanted it to be. This will be the fifth version to be released. The release itself will be a five disc special edition monster, which will include all cuts of the film.

  1. About the five versions…
I’m bothered by the fact that three of the versions, including the all-important theatrical versions, will be squeezed onto one disc. I’m afraid it’ll be another Star Wars bonus-disc fiasco, with poor mastering, non-anamorphic, etc.

  2. "artist’s intent?"
I’m sure the film didn’t come out the way he wanted it to, but cutting it 25 years later using all the latest bells and whistles guarantee it won’t resemble his original vision either.

It’s a very slippery slope from restoring footage cut due to time constraints or a disagreement between director and producer, to full out "revisionist film making" where films are reurgitated as new but with subtle but critical differences ( Greedo shooting first, Chasing ET with walkie talkies)

What’s done is done, make a new film, stop trying to rewrite the past, since you can’t help but spoil it by too much interference.

To give them credit, the release will have all five versions of the movie in the package, allowing the viewer to try them all and select a personal favourite.
