There are some great library titles coming out this week, not all of which are related to Halloween, not to mention a few more “complete series” packages of TV releases.
First, the DVD releases:
- 2001: A Space Odyssey: The first of several new Kubrick special editions due this week, and one of the best.
- The Adventures of Aquaman – The Complete Collection
- The Adventures of Young
Indiana Jones – Volume One
- American Gangster – The Complete First Season
- Barry Lyndon: A reprint of the previous release of Kubrick’s worst movie (not that he ever directed a bad one.)
- Basilisk – Box Set
- Battleship Potemkin (The
Ultimate Edition)
: A new Kino release of the 1925 Sergei Eisenstein movie thatredefined editing. Film history buffs take note.
- Black Sabbath
- Black Sunday
- Breathless – Criterion
Collection
- Burt Lancaster – The
Signature Collection
: Includes “The Flame and the Arrow,” “Jim Thorpe All-American,” “His Majesty O’Keefe,” “South Sea Woman” and “Executive Action.”

- The Company
- Cutting Class
- Days of Heaven – Criterion
Collection

and “Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea”
- The Junior Defenders
- The L Word – The Complete
Fourth Season

Season 3
- Monarch of the Glen: The
Complete Collection
- Mr. Brooks
- NCIS – The Fourth Season
- O Lucky Man!

first three “Saw” movies.
- The Shining: A new special edition of Kubrick’s Stephen King adaptation.
- The Sopranos – Season 6, Part
2
- Stanley Kubrick: A Life In Pictures: I still haven’t picked this up. (I bought the first Kubrick box set they released, which didn’t include this or “Eyes Wide Shut.”)
- Stanley Kubrick – Warner Home
Video Directors Series
: Includes the new, fancy editions of “2001: A SpaceOdyssey,” “A Clockwork Orange,” “The Shining,” “Eyes Wide Shut,” “Full Metal Jacket”
and “A Life In Pictures.” Unlike the previous sets, it does not include “Barry
Lyndon,” “Lolita,” or “Dr. Strangelove,” all of which are also worth picking up
(though I’d put “Barry Lyndon” at the bottom of the priority list.) The deluxe, non
-documentary titles are available individually in high definition, but not in the box
set.
- The Strange Case of Howard Phillips Lovecraft
- The Super Powers Team: Galactic Guardians
- Tales From The Crypt – The
Complete Seventh Season
- The Tripper
- Under the Volcano – Criterion
Collection
- United Artists Cinema Greats
Collection, Set 1
: Includes “The Pink Panther” (which didn’t impress me all thatmuch), “Dr. No” (an early and decent James Bond flick), “A Fistful of Dollars” (a
decent westernization’s of Kurosawa’s “Yojimbo”) and “The Magnificent Seven” (a
westernization of Kurosawa’s spectacular “The Seven Samurai.”)
- United Artists Cinema Greats
Collection, Set 2
: Includes “The Great Escape,” “Rocky,” “West Side Story” andthe original version of “The Thomas Crown Affair.”
- United Artists Cinema Greats
Collection, Set 3
: Includes “12 Angry Men” and “Paths of Glory,” both of whichare fantastic (the latter directed by Stanley Kubrick), as well as “A Bridge Too Far”
and “Judgment At Nuremberg,” neither of which I’ve seen and can’t comment on.
- Veronica Mars – The Complete
Third Season
- Veronica Mars – The Complete
Series
: It’s billed as “The Complete First Three Seasons,” but it was titledbefore they decided to cancel the show without a fourth season.
- Voyage to the Bottom of the
Season – Season Three, Volume Two
Now, the Blu-Ray releases:
- 2001 – A Space Odyssey
- A Clockwork Orange

- The Hills Have Eyes 2:
Unrated
- Home of the Brave
- Hostel – The Director’s Cut
- Hostel – Part II
- King of New York
- Meet The Robinsons
- Mr. Brooks
- Scary Movie: The scariest thing about this awful flick is that it made enough money to spawn sequels which also made money.
- The Shining
- The Sopranos – Season 6, Part
2
The HD DVD releases are as follows:
- 2001: A Space Odyssey
- Carlito’s Way
- Carlito’s Way: Rise To Power
- A Clockwork Orange
- Eyes Wide Shut
- Full Metal Jacket
- Inside Man
- Seed of Chucky
- The Shining
- The Sopranos – Season 6, Part
2
Finally, the pick of the week. As a huge Kubrick fan, I’m going to have to go with one of his titles. This would normally be a hard decision, but given the season, I’m going with “The Shining” in the format of your choice.
About Damn Time!
It’s about time we’re getting 2001 2-disk set (or something like that).
