Smallville Review – “Lara”

Sorry it’s late. My role at work changed significantly effective November 1, so I couldn’t get to it as soon as I’d hoped.

Cast

Tom Welling as Clark Kent
Kristen Kreuk as Lana Lang
Allison Mack as Chloe Sullivan
Erica Durance as Lois Lane
Aaron Ashmore as Jimmy Olson
Laura Vandervoort as Kara
Michael Rosenbaum as Lex Luthor
John Glover as Lionel Luthor

Written by Don Whitehead and Holly Henderson.
Directed by James L. Conway.

Original Airdate

Lara originally aired on Thursday, November 1, 2007.

Synopsis

Kara pursues the crystal to Washington D.C., and Clark follows. Both learn things about their parents they never knew before. Meanwhile, Chloe learns what Lana’s been doing in her spare time.

High Point

“…which is exactly what you’re doing.”

Low Point

Setting up that hardware in a non-profit organization’s office. Wouldn’t that be really, really hard to get through an audit?

The Review

This is somewhat original. It establishes some new information and new directions, but it feels somewhat traditional and humdrum. I give it 4 out of 6.

The effects were very well done, as usual. I give it 5 out of 6.

The story is well done. The long term story arcs are laid out, the individual moments for the episode are covered, and there are a few chuckles to be had along the way. Like much of this season, it feels like they’ve lost sight of building suspense within a single episode because they are so focused on building up for the season. Hopefully that means we’ll be in for a big payoff by the end of the year. I give it 4 out of 6.

The acting was well done, including some of Vandervoort’s strongest work yet. I give it 5 out of 6.

The emotional response was bland. As I said, it feels like they’ve put too much energy into the future and lost sight of what’s going on right now. I give it 3 out of 6.

The production was well done, keeping the various flashbacks clearly marked by their look alone. I give it 5 out of 6.

Overall, it’s another piece of the seasonwide puzzle that will likely work better in a marathon session viewing than in a weekly dose. I give it 4 out of 6.

In total, Lara receives 30 out of 42.

  1. this show…
…is beginning to make me lose my ability to suspend disbelief (and I’m very good at that).

Also, the ending reminded me of "Superman Is A Dick". He lied to Kara!

  2. I’m still stunned
I’m still stunned that they just breezed right over any scene with Chloe finding out Lana is still alive. I think this episode was the first time the two have seen each other (for us viewers at least) since Lana "died". Now I know I’ve been bored with most of this season so far, but I know I didn’t miss anything. It’s really disappointing that they just left that discovery out of the show.
