Razor Discussion

joe__gee has pointed out that we should at least have a discussion up for Battlestar Galactica: Razor. We held off on that so far because we’ll have a review of the extended edition up next week, when it hits the home video market. If you can’t wait until then to talk about it, chime in here.

And David Willis summed it up quite nicely.

I understand that people’s attention spans "aren’t what they used to be," but holy crap! Must we have a summary after every 10-ish minute long segment?

And do you have to jump up and down, waving your hands, screaming "We’re edgy, motherf***ers! We have lesbians!"

Aside from that, I enjoyed it. This episode would have been sooo much better without the stupid commercial breaks.

I didn’t get this sense at all. Was lebianism used in promo material? I don’t see how this relationship was handled differently than any others in the series. We had one kiss (other characters have been shown doing a lot more) and a brief discussion of the relationship (not new to the series). They then used the fact of the relationship as a plot point, with the implications of the Admiral’s sense of betrayal.

      What am I missing?

      • Re: OK, I have a low point…
It wasn’t the lesbianism in and of itself, it was the stupid recap thing. The recaps sucked, all together, and they made the lesbian relationship look like a cheap ploy to be edgy.

neat thing about DVRs, you can skip those stupid things, sometimes accidentally. I didn’t even know they did that until someone else told me they did.

Without the recaps, thought it was handled rather nicely.

You must be quick to the trigger, then. I also use my DVR constantly, but even still, it was like Razor wasn’t finished fading to black before Quizno’s was all "Mmmmm… Lesbians".

probably almost 25 years of practice. When I was a kid I used to ‘bleep out the commercials’ when I’d take Airwolf, Blue Thunder, Kinght Rider, etc for my Dad when he wasn’t home.

Now, I basically know when it fades to black on NBC if I hit the 30s skip on the DirecTV HDR 6 times, it’ll stop with the 5 s ‘people die by looking at the sun, more details at 11’ bumper and with sci fi they trick you up by doing a 6, 6, 7 pattern but most of the time that works too.

I’ll admit I thought I went to far the first spot but when the deep voice did the ‘weve just learned’ that was all I heard and it was skip ahead and I didn’t even know they were Quizno’s commercials until I saw the post here.

              • Re: OK, I have a low point…

Either we missed them in the recording or they ran different commercials in Canada.

We didn’t see the recap, either.

Ah, MythTV actually finds and skips the commercials for you :-). I actually didn’t see the hideous recap until I went back looking for the promo for the next season that I knew would be there.

And yes, it was hideous, but I think I must have, thankfully , missed more which I will _not_ go back and look for.

  2. original toasters
Were the old skewl Cylons thrown in just for fan service? They seemed really out of place. If the Hybrid was revered as (a) god, why was he guarded by outdated technology?

Because, he was only regarded as a god by the outdated technology, the newer cylons may have done away with him. Just look at the difference of opinion between him and Leoben with regards to Starbuck.

There is no difference of opinion: Her destiny points to Earth, with genocidal Cylons in tow.

It all depends on your point of view. The newer cylons think its a good thing. But apparently the old cylons don’t. But they didn’t actually interact peacefully with the humans. I think the cylon groups definately have a different mindset.

We know that the new humanoid Cylons have reprogrammed the centurions to be incapable of self-determination, perhaps their was a Cylon civil war of sorts with the old guard not too thrilled with the scrap heap that their new overlords had planned for them.

  3. Mmmm…Toasters
I find it incredibly ironic that our long awaited tween-season dose of Humans fighting the Toasters was ruined by some disembodied voice repeatedly spoiling the willing suspension of disbelief and immersion by monaing "Mmmm….toasty!" This was either deliberately not funny or unintentionally hilarious.

The movie was OK, about what I expected, focusing on an expendible Pegasus red shirt, showing some video on the perviously verbal Pegasus-Greatest-Hits of killing first officers and civilians in wartime, building up Hybrid hype for Starbuck’s return, resolving nothing.

I was intrigued on the one scene where they showed the young Bill Adama. Somehow I think this is the only "new" thread introduced that is going to lead somewhere, but I can’t figure out how. Tie in for the oft-discussed Caprica prequel show? Doppelganger swap? Leaving his DNA for Cylon use by reaching into the soup? Boyy, was THAT stupid…I half expected the Hybrid 40 years later to be HIM….

If nothing else, the writers have created a path out of the corner they’ve painted themselves into by the canon having only 12 cloned Cylon skinjob models, one yet unrevealed. Now that the Cylon race itself has been split by the writers into various "nations", each with its own approach to an "arms race" with one creating Hybrids, another The Twelve, and so forth, there’s no limit to what kind of Cylons the remaining humans could run across, just like aliens in Star Trek.

If we’re getting to THAT point, maybe it’s time to wrap this story up for good…

      5. Until you see multiple copies, you don’t assume that the captured, tortured and brainwashed people’s beliefs actually reflect reality.

True. That is, unless you’re in charge of Gitmo or Abu Gharib, and Dubya wants intel NOW…

If you mean the four folks we found out are Cylons aren’t, they are. Ron’s made it clear this isn’t a switcheroo. It’s no longer who are the final five, it’s who is the final one.

If the final cylon turns out to be Admiral Adama you have my word here that I will immediately destroy my television set.

He also made it clear that Starbuck was dead for good and it wasn’t a switcharoo: Until I see many copies, they just think they’re Cylons.

          And: Baltar.

  4. Quizno’s?
Reading all these comments makes me REALLY happy I have a DVR, since I really don’t know what y’all are talking about (:

  5. Thanks for putting up this discussion!
I’ve watched this three times now. It gets better the second time, and the third time I really caught the nuances.

My low points daddy Adama chaperoning his son, Sharon’s uncomfortable Cylon cult exposition/explanation, and Starbuck’s "I got my palm read by a Cylon" remark), mostly disappeared after the second watching. I still don’t particularly like elder Adama countermanding his son’s order on the bridge "the Admiral is directly interfering with my command, get him the frack off of my bridge!" but Kara didn’t die between seasons two and three. :)

    My high points:

The attack on the Scorpio Fleet dry-docks. Excellent special effects.

The whole Gina/Helena thing was OK by me. It adds a new dimension to the Sixes. I’m thinking they’re engineered specifically to be temptress/sex kitten/Mata Hari types.

On the old battlestar I knew the blaster sounds were very familiar. The foley people used the sounds of some of the weapons from "Aliens". During the same scenes, the name of one of the expendable crew, "Hudson". It was a small tribute, and I suspect it was intentional.

Also, Kara says something to the effect of "I love it when a plan comes together." A nod to Dirk Benedict’s A-Team?

The old Cylons using the classic voder-altered speech.

Your mileage may vary, but thanks again for putting up this discussion!

I thought the door pneumatics sounded familiar, too. Babylon 5, maybe? Or, has it just been too long since I last saw a BSG episode?

possibly the "big doors" from one of the star treks (holodecks, shuttle bays, etc…). definetly heard them somewhere before.

You might be on to something. The sound was lacking the trailing "discharge" sound from ST, but I think the "pneumatic" part was the same.

I too thought "who’s walking in the holodeck?"…
