Weekly Digital Disc Picks – Dec. 18 and Dec. 25/26, 2007

Due to the upcoming holiday, I’m assuming many people will be far too busy to check the site and browse online shopping. As a result, and also due to the extremely short list of releases that week, I’ve combined releases from both weeks into a single (pair of) column(s). Also, as Christmas Day is a Tuesday, the bulk of the releases are coming out on Wednesday, December 26 instead.

December 18, 2007 December 25, 2007 (note that the vast majority of these titles won’t be available until Wednesday, Dec. 26)

First, the DVD releases:

Now, the Blu-Ray releases:

The HD DVD releases are as follows:

Finally, the pick of the week. As if there were any doubt: pick up your favourite flavour of Blade Runner on the best medium your home system supports.

Finally, the pick of the week. I’ve heard great things about Pan’s Labyrinth, but I haven’t seen it myself, so my recommendation this week is to just go buy yourself whatever Santa missed.

  1. Let me save you some time and money
Galactica 1980 is at LEAST as bad as you remember. Possibly even WORSE.

*sigh* This is the week where I decide whether or not I get a bluray player (aka PS3). My real issue is I’m out of component inputs on my AV Receiver. And my TV thanks to my sat receiver frying one component input. I might need to get a new TV so I cam move some stuff to HDMI…

I strongly recommend HDMI. I’m one of a number of people who can’t get more than 2.0 stereo out of the optical with a Blu-Ray source on the PS3 (though it plays full 5.1 on DVDs just fine.) My (rudimentary) research seems to indicate that the optical channel can’t handle the upgrade from 480kb/s to 640kb/s sampling rates in the format upgrade, but HDMI users don’t have any issues at all due to the newer format. My projector is the last non-HDMI component in my home system, and that’s on my list of things to get next year specifically for this reason.

        I strongly recommend HDMI.

That’d be ideal, but again, my TV doesn’t have HDMI so I can’t get video through it. I can get audio since my AV receiver has HDMI, but I’m still stuck with no place to plug video into.

Okay. I still recommend holding off on Blu-Ray until you can go HDMI, though. It sounds like, in your position, I’d upgrade the TV first. (I’d have done that with my projector had I known about the sound issue in advance.) You may also want to hold off until March or April anyway, as both LG and Samsung plan to release players that support both Blu-Ray and HD DVD formats near the $700 price point, which eliminates the "format war" concern and lets you use the 5.1 sound with HD DVD immediately. You can even start collecting the DVD/HD DVD combo format discs to build your collection before you get the player, if you’d like. (That’s actually what I’ve been recommending to all who ask me; get the combo format movies now, and get the player in the spring.)

I most likely will. Or at least let the format war go on for a bit longer.

You can already get an LG one for under $700… to be honest, that’s still too much!

  2. Bring It On

Bring It On: In It To Win It: I sometimes wonder which demographic of DVD collector is actually buying enough DVDs to keep the series alive.

I guess that would be the demographic that likes to see young, athletic girls in skimpy outfits. Sort of like Baywatch in that respect–who cares about the plot, after all…

I watched it religiously when it was on MTV. It’s a fantastic show, I can’t recommend it enough. Like everything great on TV it didn’t last very long though :(
