Jackson to Produce The Hobbit and Sequel

Apparently Peter Jackson and New Line have set aside their money squabbles and have signed Jackson to produce ‘The Hobbit’ and a sequel.

Not sure what is meant by a sequel. I’m guessing they’re breaking it into two movies, which is fine by me, it’s a pretty big book. Someone more Tolkien-literate than me can correct me, but I don’t think he wrote a book about events between The Hobbit and Fellowship.

The films go into production in 2009 with The Hobbit coming in 2010 and the sequel in 2011.

  1. The sequel
I think plenty of source material has been released by Christopher Tolkien to make a movie that bridges the time between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings in some way. I haven’t read any of it myself but that’s what I read many times when the rumors were still flying about PJ doing The Hobbit and wanting to do a "bridge movie".

  3. Two-part Adaptation
From TFA: "a two-part adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit"

From this, and the wording in the rest of the article, I’m pretty sure that it’s going to be The Hobbit split into two movies, one called The Hobbit and another yet to be named.

I’d be surprised if "There and Back Again" wasn’t used somewhere in the titles.

I’d love it if they did:

        Hobbit I : There
        Hobbit II : Back Again
