“Galactica 1980” out today

When I wrote this week’s Digital Disk Picks last week, it looked like virtually all releases this week were coming on Wednesday, Dec. 26 instead of Tuesday, Dec. 25. It has since been announced that Battlestar Galactica 1980 has its release dated moved to today, Sunday, December 23 instead. If you’re doing any last minute shopping for someone who wants really, really bad sci fi, keep this in mind.

  1. All I want for Christmas

This is sort of the SF nerd version of getting a lump of coal in your stocking.

  2. Battlestar
I was born in 1980, so I’m a bit young to remember it :-) What did I miss? Judging from the comments, not a whole lot.

I was only 3 when it aired, so I remember it from reruns a few years ago. Essentially, the first Battlestar Galactica was popular, but not popular enough to cover its huge budget, so it was cancelled. The network became convinced that it could still be successful if they could get the budget down. The solution: have the Battlestar find contemporary Earth, and continue the adventures with a lot of location shooting. It was much, much cheaper, and much, much worse. I can probably review my set if there’s enough interest, and if I can actually tolerate watching the whole thing in a short enough time frame to discuss it effectively.

The good: flying motorcycles. Always wanted one.

The bad: flying smug galactican genius cub scouts.

There are more details, but that really sums it up.

There was actually one episode I really liked, where a human-looking cylon and his centurion bodyguards crashland on Earth and need to find a transmitter to call for help. It had Wolfman Jack and a nice scene where a centurion was disabled at a Halloween party by a microwave oven.
