Weekly Digital Disc Picks – January 8, 2007

The volume of releases has picked up a bit, but we don’t see a great change in quality for another week or two.

First, the DVD releases:

Now, the Blu-Ray releases:

The HD DVD releases are as follows:

Finally, the pick of the week. Given this mediocre lot, I’d go with The Rock if you have Blu-Ray capability, or Two and a Half Men: Season Two if you don’t.

On a tangentially related note, the last uncommitted studio (Warner) just move from double format to Blu-Ray exclusive, effective May 2008. That means Universal and Paramount are on HD DVD, but Sony, Warner, Disney and Fox are all on Blu-Ray. Man, am I glad I can play both.

I finally broke down and got a bluray player (well, a PS3).

And I already have pretty much all the bluray discs I actually want… which is a bit sad! I hope they start ramping that up. And that bluray wins!

Arrh! The rest of that is missing.

Shades of Beta/VHS. I’ll make a decision when it’s definite, or maybe I’ll just wait it out ’til the next thing comes along.

Regular DVD should be really cheap in a few years….

There are players, currently on the market, that can handle both Blu-ray and HD-DVD, but they’re so expensive that it’s cheaper instead to buy a Blu-ray player and an HD-DVD player.
