Steve Gerber, one of the most original talents in comics, died February 10, 2008 from Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. Gerber, perhaps best-known as the creator of Howard the Duck, will be missed.

I started buying comics regularly in college in the fall of 1975. Howard was one of the reasons I kept buying them. It was so weird, so different, addressing topical themes with a duck and always funny. He was one of the reasons I started noticing who wrote the books.

Unfortunately I only ever knew of Howard through the rather terrible film – however I now feel the urge to investigate the comics.
