Smallville Review – “Veritas”

We seem to be on an upswing in quality, which is good news considering how low the series had swung before…

Cast

Tom Welling as Clark Kent
Kristen Kreuk as Lana Lang
Allison Mack as Chloe Sullivan
Erica Durance as Lois Lane
Aaron Ashmore as Jimmy Olson
Laura Vandervoort as Kara
Michael Rosenbaum as Lex Luthor
John Glover as Lionel Luthor

Written by Brian Peterson and Kelly Sounders
Directed by James Marshall

Original Airdate

Veritas originally aired on Thursday, March 27, 2008.

Synopsis

Lex is actively investigating Veritas, due in large part to memories restored by his gunshot wound to the head from earlier this season. Lionel seems desperate to warn Clark about something, and Brainiac has returned to manipulate Kara into helping him by attacking Lana. Lois and Jimmy join forces to investigate the murder of Patty Swann.

High Point

The Lois and Jimmy team is fun to see together. Brainiac is also being well used as a villain here.

Low Point

Lex’s memories are really stretching coincidence here. He controls the lab that restored his memories the first time, and they use a gunshot wound instead of a physician to get the job done?

The Review

This feels somewhat original. The plots feel like they’re moving forward, and it looks like some of the players may have new goals. I give it 5 out of 6.

The effects were well done, from the flying to the brain invasion and everything in between. I give it 5 out of 6.

The story had the one silver age element I griped about in the low point, and a whole lot of explicit exposition. The actual forward momentum was generally good, but Lex’s first few appearances required more talking than acting. I give it 4 out of 6.

The acting was fairly strong from all involved. Glover really seemed desperate, and Welling did an excellent job on the final scene. I give it 5 out of 6.

The emotional response is the strongest this series has produced in months. The pieces seem to be moving, and quickly at that. There’s a season finale coming, and they seem to be building towards it after a refreshing break for the strike. I give it 5 out of 6.

The production was strong all around. The sound, lighting and editing all did their jobs. I give it 5 out of 6.

Overall, this was one of the strongest episodes in a long time. If they could only write like this mid-season as consistently as they do before extended breaks… I give it 5 out of 6.

In total, Veritas receives 34 out of 42.

  1. My High Point
The very real possibility that Lana could be dead. For real this time.

    I really hope that sticks!

  2. Flying
I was highly disappointed that they didn’t show him trying and failing to fly there are the end.
